High School State Championships: Massachusetts Fall

Massachusetts, November 21. MASSACHUSETTS swimmers closed out the first portion of their state swimming championships Nov. 17 at Harvard University’s Blodgett Pool in Boston. The second half of the championships will occur in February at the Winter Championships.

Division 1
Chelmsford’s girls team swam away with the team title, scoring 381.5 points. Andover came in second (278.5), followed by Framingham (252), Acton-Boxborough (243) and Newton North (217).

Chelmsford senior Jennifer Day, who will swim for Arkansas next year, captured the 200 yard free (1:55.65) and tied in the 500 free (5:05.72) with Maeve Awiszus, a senior at Andover. Caitlin Sheridan also collected two titles with her 2:06.15 in the 200 IM and 52.69 in the 100 free.

Chelmsford’s domination was also evident in the relays, as they swept first place in all three events. Juniors Anna Haywood, Rebecca Pierce plus seniors Shannon Wright and Alexandra McCafferty combined for a 1:51.89 in the 200 medley. Junior Crystal Zhu, senior Alexandra Omobono, Day and Sheridan topped the field in the 200 free (1:39.96); Haywood, Omobono, Day and Sheridan wound up the meet with their 400 free relay victory (3:36.86).

Andover’s Awiszus, who has committed to Central Connecticut State, gained a second title of her own with her 59.14 in the 100 back. Brockton senior Virginia Burns also claimed two event victories with her 23.95 in the 50 free and 56.64 in the 100 fly. She will swim at Penn next season. Jessica Crowley, a senior at Acton-Boxborough, posted a winning 1:07.66 in the 100 breast. Maura Sticco-Ivins was the diving champion. The senior from Framingham collected a total of 510.55 points.

Braintree’s boys 200 medley relay of sophomores Christian Quigley, Matthew Gaffney and John Magnuson–plus junior Nicolas Lau–joined forces for a 1:41.70. Gaffney set a state meet record 1:04.95 in the 100 breast. Magnuson posted times of 58.13 in the 100 fly and 2:09.06 in the 200 IM. Lao finished the 50 free in 23.98.

Division 2
Bishop Feehan’s team put together 317.5 points for the Division 2 victory. Belmont took second (287.5), followed by Natick (159.5), Reading (151) and Westwood (144), Finishing just one point back in sixth was Wellesley (143).

Maddie Myers, a senior at Bishop Feehan, was a double-event champion in the 200 and 500 free (1:54.92 and 5:03.26). Myers’ teammate, junior Marisa Reidemeister, also collected two titles with her 2:07.73 in the 200 IM and 1:06.79 in the 100 breast. The duo, along with sophomoer Hannah Nitso and senior Shelly LaPierre, combined for a 3:43.16 in the 400 free relay.

Jessica Blake-West was the only individual event champion for Belmont. The sophomore took charge in the 100 fly in 56.87 and swam a leg on Belmont’s triumphant 200 medley relay with senior Jiaqi Li, sophomore Emily Quinn and senior Anasstasia Pulak (1:51.87).

Central Catholic’s 200 free relay placed first in 1:42.77 with the quartet of sophomores Meghan Jacobs and Lee Guldemond, freshman Kylee Dion and senior Jacqueline Russolillo.

Westwood junior Samantha McDonald topped the field in the 50 free (24.57). Kathryn Smith, a Walpole junior who finshed second to McDonald (24.81), easily won the 100 free in 53.95. Abby Lake, a junior at Ursuline Academy, claimed the 100 back win with her 58.81. The diving title went to Walpole sophomore Hannah Phelan, who put together a total diving score of 483.25 points.
