ST. PETERS, Missouri, November 17. ALTHOUGH no state records were set, there were plenty of exciting races at the Missouri Boys State High School Swimming and Diving Championships Nov. 16-17 at the Rec-Plex Swimming Pool in St. Peters.
Seniors Will Brand from Glendale and Zach Rogers, swimming for Parkway Central, tied in the 200 yard free (1:41.07). Brand, who will be attending Missouri State this coming fall, also took first in the 100 fly in another close contest. He posted a winning 50.77, just ahead of SUHL senior Luke Sloan.
Rogers, headed for Missouri next season, finished second in his second event by just 1-hundredth of a second. Vianney sophomore Nick Alexander claimed first in the 100 breast with his 50.65 in the 100 back to Rogers' 50.66. Rogers' future teammate at Missouri, Ryan Baker from Francis Howell, posted a winning 4:28.22 in the 500 free.
Kevin Steinhouse closed out his career at John Burroughs with a 21.00-21.15 victory in the 50 free just head of Marcin Glabocki, a Park Hill sophomore. Sam Stapleton, a senior at Rockwood Summit, touched first in the 100 free ahead of Connor Gregston, a Blue Springs South senior, 46.45 to 46.61. And in the 100 breast, Nixa freshman Jordan Hill emerged just ahead of Rockhurst junior Alex Albracht, 57.68 to 57.75.
Ethan Bresette, a senior at Lee's Summit North, cruised to a 1:51.17 first-place finish in the 2oo IM (1:51.17). Rockhurst sophomore David Knopke earned the diving title with 436.80.
Three different squads earned valuable first-place points for their respective schools: Staley's 200 medley relay of junior Daniel Maynard, senior Nathaniel Vawter, sophomore Alex Gach and senior Ryan Duffy (1:36.39); John Burrough's 200 free relay of senior Daniel Diemer, juniors Valos Kouvelis and Tyler Waterman and Steinhouse (1:26.07); and Lee's Summit North's 400 free relay of junior Michael Hynes, sophomore Thomas Reilly, senior James White and Bresette (3:09.91).
Rockhurst scored 220 points for the team title. Blue Springs South claimed second, just ahead of Lees Summit North (163-161). Parkway Central took fourth (143.5), followed closely by John Burroughs (133).
