LOS ALAMITOS, California, October 24. IN what could be one of the most exciting developments in high school swimming in quite some time, the CIF-Southern Section is proposing that the CIF host a single high school state swimming and diving championship according to Dan Albano of OCVarsity.com.
California has always been a bit of an abnormal state in that it is so big that it only has sectional championships. Therefore, high school swimmers in the state have never actually been able to call themselves State Champions without some sort of qualifier that the CIF doesn't have a championship meet, but they posted the fastest time in the state that year.
Going forward, should the proposal pass, California's high school state championship will ascend to the must-see-TV status of meets like those in Florida, Texas, Indiana, Arizona and Ohio for some of the most intense prep school matchups at the end of the season.
Additionally, the CIF-Southern Section proposed Long Beach, Riverside and Clovis as potential host cities for the grand championship that would begin in May 2015. The final vote on the measure will take place in February 2014.
