Scotland’s Mark Szaranek Makes Verbal Commitment to be a Michigan Wolverine

DUNFERMLINE, Scotland, October 18. MICHIGAN head coach Mike Bottom reached across the Atlantic Ocean for his latest college recruiting, snagging Scotland’s Mark Szaranek for next fall’s freshman class.

Szaranek should give the Wolverines a wealth of racing options when he arrives in Ann Arbor, as the Auchmuty High School senior is talented in freestyle, butterfly and individual medley events. His best event might be the 200 IM, as he was a semifinalist in that event at the 2012 British Olympic Trials with a 2:05.65. One year later, he improved to 2:02.49 in his bronze medal swim at the European junior championships this past July.

According to his profile on ScottishSwimming.com, he also lists both butterflys, 400 IM and the 100 and 200 free as his top events. He holds a long course time of 4:30.73 in the 400 IM, 54.27 in the 100 fly, 2:03.73 in the 200 fly, 51.64 in the 100 free and 1:53.21 in the 200 free.

Szaranek’s prowess in the 200 IM will help the Wolverines replace NCAA finalist Kyle Whitaker when his eligibility ends this season, and his versatility in other events could be a great asset as he continues to develop in his time at Michigan.

“I made this decision based on the academic and athletic opportunities provided by the University of Michigan,” Szaranek said. “I have developed a great rapport with the coaching staff and I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with them in the future.”

Szaranek is a part of Carnegie Swim club in Scotland, and is coached by his father, John. In addition to being a part of the British team at the junior European championships, Szaranek is Scottish national age group champion and holds at least seven Scottish national age group records.
