Tennessee Locks Down Volunteer State With State’s Top Recruit Sam McHugh

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee, October 10. FOR the second year in a row, the Tennessee Volunteers picked up the top recruit in the Volunteer State. Just a year after earning the services of Evan Pinion in the Class of 2014, Baylor’s Sam McHugh is headed to Knoxville after committing to head coach Matt Kredich today.

McHugh, a bluechip recruit who is ranked 16th in the Class of 2014 by CollegeSwimming.com, is a huge score for the Big Orange. The Junior National Teamer earned 2013 Southeastern Swimming Swimmer of the Year honors.

SwimmingWorld.TV fans definitely know who McHugh is, as his best times aired live on our 2013 NCSA Junior Nationals stream this year. He threw down a 1:44.21 in the 200-yard back, a 1:45.06 in the 200-yard fly and a 3:50.64 in the 400-yard IM in Orlando.

McHugh, who trains with phenomenal age group and high school coach Dan Flack at Baylor, also has a 1:48.00 in the 200-yard IM to his credit from the 2013 Tennessee High School Championships.

McHugh is also a dynamic competitor in the long course pool. He owns top times in the 200-meter fly (1:59.23), 400-meter IM (4:25.26), 200-meter IM (2:05.37) and 200-meter back (2:03.54), all from an incredible meet at the 2013 U.S. Open this summer.

It’s been a breakthrough year for the young man from Chattanooga, and there’s no reason to believe that his progress while training for Flack and then Kredich will slow down one iota.
