High School State Swimming Championships: CIF Central Division 2

TULARE, California, May 22. The girls title at the CIF Central Section Division 2 Swimming and Diving Championships, held May 17-18, was decided by just seven points. The Kingsburg Lady Vikings edged the Hanford West Huskies, 234-227, for first place. The Tulare Union Redskins had a much easier time of it in the boys race, earning their first-ever championship with 289 points over the Edison Tigers' 208.5.

Girls
Highland's Taylor Solorio set Division 2 standards with her 2:05.41 in the 200 IM and 56.63 in the 100 fly. Also lowering division marks were Kingsburg's Katelyn Herrera (200 free, 1:56.96), Hanford West's Dagmar Gudmundsson (50 free, 23.76), Tulare Western's Khloe McCarthy (500 free, 5:05.83), Mallory Korenwinder (100 breast, 1:03.98) and Taft Union's Melissa Gore (diving, 435.35 points).

Gudmundsson came within 2-hundredths of her second division mark with her 52.38 in the 100 free. McCarthy also picked up another victory in the 100 back (1:01.27).

Hanford West's 200 free relay of Kaitlin Hatfield, Haley Baker, Allyson Duffy and Gudmundsson set the only relay Division 2 standard with their 1:42.03. The quartet missed the 200 medley mark by just 3-hundredths (1:56.21). Highland's 400 free relay of Sara Baldridge, Lauren Arias, Brittney Lumsden and Solorio posted a winning 3:46.29.

In a tight battle for third through fifth places, Yosemite grabbed third (179 points), followed by Bakersfield Christian (168) and Highland (163).

Boys
Corcoran's Chris Nolan set the only two Division 2 records during the boys portion of the competition with his winning 1:41.35 in the 200 free and 50.36 in the 100 fly. Chris Salcedo of Independence, who finished a close second to Nolan in the 200 free with his 1:41.57, earned a first-place time of 4:41.10 in the 500 free.

Two other swimmers were able to win more than one event. Joseph Cobarrubias, swimming for Edison, swept the sprint free events (50 free, 21.89; 100 free, 48.25). Tulare Western's Nathan Rhea put together winning times of 1:58.56 in the 200 IM and 1:00.32 in the 100 breast.

Highland's Aaron Pike finished first in the 100 back (53.23), and Roderick Burkett of Exeter Union's dives earned him a first-place final score of 356.90 points.

Pike led off the victorious Highland 200 medley relay of Brian Bumgarner, Chance Marchini and Joey Quinonez to a 1:41.16 finish. Tulare Union put together a 200 free relay quartet of Conor Martin, Erik Pedersen, Trevor DeLeeuw and Eric Schlick which grabbed first with their 1:29.87. Cobarrubias anchored Edison's 400 free relay of Ishaq Ali, Kyle Tsutsui and Bryce Matsumara which combined for 3:18.44.

Third place in the team standings went to Central Valley Christian with 201 points, followed by Kingsburg (183) and Highland (165).
