High School State Swimming Championships: Nevada

CARSON CITY, Nevada, May 19. FOR the first time, high school swimmers competed in Divisions 1 and 1A to determine champions in the Nevada High School Swimming and Diving Championships. The two meets were held May 18 at the Carson Aquatic Center in Carson City, Nevada. Previously, the championships were held as a single-division event.

Division 1
With 140 points, Bishop Gorman claimed the girls team title, ahead of Palo Verde (82), Galena (68), Douglas (64) and Green Valley (38.5).

Bishop Gorman was helped greatly with their sweep of the relay titles. The 200 medley squad of Anne Boodt, Lindsey Englestead, Olivia Barker and Catie Miller combined for a winning 1:47.45. Marley Maluafiti and Amy Lubawy joined Barker and Miller for a 1:38.15 victory in the 200 free, just 1-tenth ahead of Galena's McKenna Meyer, Annika Perry, Megan Lloyd and Rachel Matsumara (1:38.25). The Gaels quartet of Lubawy, Rachel Boodt, Anne Boodt and Maluafiti finished off the meet–and the sweep–with a 3:36.86 in the 400 free relay.

Individual Bishop Gorman titles went to Barker and Lubawy. Barker set the only state record among the girls with her 54.52 in the 100 fly and captured the 200 IM in 2:04.56. Lubawy missed setting a state record by 2-hundredths with her 23.50 in the 50 free.

Palo Verde's Izzy Goldsmith posted first-place times of 1:50.07 in the 200 free and 1:02.71 in the 100 breast. Teammate Erin Emery's winning 4:55.43 gave the Panthers additional points.

Shelby Koontz from Douglas placed first in the 100 free (51.19), as did Galena's Matsumara in the 100 back (56.82). Bishop Manogue's Ally Concepcion was first in diving, scoring 466.55 points.

On the boys side, Palo Verde emerged as the team champion with 123 points, ahead of Green Valley (107), Coronado (73), Reno (48) and Douglas (41).

The Panthers were led by Logan Houck, champion in the 200 free (1:42.63), Adam Henley in the 500 free (4:35.45), Luke Trafton in the 100 back (52.19) and Michael Mortenson in the 100 fly (51.47). They joined forces for a winning 3:16.13 in the 400 free relay.

Green Valley was triumphant in both the 200 medley and 200 free relays. Carter Friedrich, Michael Velazquez, Scott Budshaw and Jackson Hawkins combined for a 1:37.06 in the 200 medley; Michael Hawkins and Connor Smith, along with Friedrich and Velazquez, took charge of the 200 free with their 1:28.41. Velazquez took home individual titles in the 200 IM (1:53.35) and 100 breast (57.79).

Patrick McCrillis took home victories in the sprint freestyle races, posting times of 21.59 in the 50 free and 46.52 in the 100 free. T.C. Greenwald and his brother Brayden went 1-2 in the diving event, with T.C. scoring 441.90 points to Brayden's 431.25.

Division 1A
Boulder City took charge in both the girls and boys races. The Eagles soared to commanding victories of 193 points in the girls division and 191 points in the boys. Truckee finished second in both with nearly identical scores of 97 points (girls) and 96 points (boys). South Tahoe placed third among the girls with 56 points, followed by Churchill's 46 and Faith Lutheran's 36. Sage Ridge was third in the boys competition with 58.5 points, with Clark fourth (50) and Virgin Valley fifth (26).

The Lady Eagles earned the top spot on the podium in every race except one–the 100 breast, which was captured by Truckee's Brittney Straw (1:06.23). Earning two victories apiece were Alexandria Hubel (50 free, 24.15; 100 free, 51.28) and Rachael Grothe (100 back, 1:01.97; 100 fly, 58.53). Also claiming victory were Cori Molisee (200 free, 1:52.31), Megan Purdy (500 free, 5:02.46) and Rebecca Lelles (200 IM, 2:12.77). No girls diving event was held.

In the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Lelles, Natalie Grothe, Rachael Grothe and Huber combined for a 1:51.50. Molisee, Jessica Purdy, Lelles and Purdy teamed up for a 1:42.34 in the 200 free relay; Molisee, Rachael Grothe, Purdy and Hubel took care of the 400 free relay with their 3:39.70.

Truckee's Alex Straw prevented a Boulder City sweep of the individual events with his winning efforts of 1:54.72 in the 200 IM and 56.70 in the 100 breast, along with Mohave's Jacob Cornish in diving (489,.90 points). Otherwise, it was all Eagles taking home first-place trophies: Jeremy Estes in the 50 free (21.18) and 100 fly (50.69); Jared Smith in the 200 and 500 free (1:38.86 and 4:31.92); and Joseph Gebhart in the 100 free (46.80) and 100 back (51.38).

Boulder City's 200 medley relay of Matthew Stewart, Braden Gunner, Estes and Tore Grasso set a state record 1:34.17. Gebhart, Evan Klouse, Grasso and Gunnar posted a 1:26.62 in the 200 free relay; Estes, Sam Sauerbrei, Smith and Gebhart put together a 3:08.09 in the 400 free relay.
