High School State Swimming Championships: CIF Sac-Joaquin Section

LODI, California, May 13. DAVIS High School earned its second straight girls title and the Jesuit boys nabbed their first title in three years at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Championships May 10-11 in Lodi. Six CIF sectional records were lowered during the two-day competition.

Girls
Davis swimmers combined for 360 points, giving them their second straight title. Rio Americano, the runner-up squad from last year, fell to third with their 258 points. Granite Bay grabbed the second spot with their 295 points–their best finish since 2008 when they also finished second. St. Francis claimed fourth with 185 points, followed by Vacaville's 126.

All three relays set CIF sectional marks. Davis bettered its 1:44.66 from last year in the 200 medley relay with their 1:44.26, and lowered Rio Americano's 3:28.44 in the 400 free relay from 2012 to 3:26.51. Rio Americano kept their record streak going in the 200 free relay, improving from last year's 1:35.94 with this year's effort of 1:35.32.

Chenoa Devine, a freshman at Davis, earned victories in the 200 and 500 free (1:49.61 and 4:49.18). Senior Tara Halsted closed out her Davis career with her second win in a row in the 100 back (55.46) and also claimed first in the 200 IM (2:02.07) over teammate Emma Barksdale, a sophomore (2:02.16). Also contributing valuable winning points to Davis' cause were juniors Alex Riegler (100 free, 51.49, second straight year) and Kathleen Benjamin (100 breast, 1:03.31).

Brittany Aoyama, a senior at Linden, defended her title in the 50 free with her 23.32, just 8-hundredths off the CIF mark. She added a second victory with her 53.69 in the 100 fly.

St. Francis senior Amy Crane was looking for her third straight victory in the 1-meter diving event. She missed her goal by just 1.40 points, finishing second to Nevada Union senior Mikaela Lujan (463.30 to 461.90).

Boys
Granite Bay, who were the Sac-Joaquin champions the past two years, fell to third–just 8.5 points out of first. Jesuit moved up from being runner-up to Granite Bay the past two years to first with their 239.5 points. Davis took second (235), followed by Granite Bay (231). Oakridge claimed fourth with 205 points, with Bear River fifth (155).

Jesuit junior Chris Wieser erased Kent Johnson's 1993 mark of 4:23.77 in the 500 free with his 4:23.01. Also setting CIF division standards were Connor Hoppe, a junior at Golden Valley, and Jorden Gotno, an Oakdale senior. Hoppe's 54.81 in the 100 breast took care of the 55.74 tie posted by both Keenan Newman in 2002 and Matt Whittle last year. Gotno put together a final diving score of 612.55 points, taking down Derek Roth's 2007 total of 591.45 points.

Whittle completed his junior season for Davis by defending his title in the 100 fly (48.26, missing a division mark by 1-tenth) and taking the 200 IM in 1:48.69. Sophomore Riley Hickman gave Davis 40 more points with his wins in the 100 and 200 free (45.28 and 1:38.27).

Davis' 200 medley relay finished first for the second straight year with this year's 1:34.22; the 400 free relay also won with their 3:06.23. Davis last won this event in 2007. Jesuit's 200 free relay prevented a Davis sweep by defending their title with a 1:25.37.

Vista Del Lago senior Adam Banks was tops in the 100 back (50.74). Kevin Wylder, a Granite Bay junior, claimed first in the 50 free (20.96).
