RIVERSIDE, California, May 10. BOTH teams--Crean Lutheran's girls and John W. North's boys--claimed their first-ever team titles at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division 3 Championships. Five division records--all on the girls side--fell during the meet.
Crean Lutheran figures to be at the top of the D3 girls standings for the next couple of years. This year's squad put together 250 points for the team title, ahead of Laguna Beach (191.5), La Reina (162), Viewport (160) and La Serna (147).
Leading the way were sisters Ella and Emily Eastin. Besides Ella's national independent high school record in the 200 IM (1:55.15), she also claimed the 500 free (4:44.47). In her first year of high school competition, Emily grabbed victories in the 100 back (54.16) and 100 fly (54.68).
Together with juniors Lindsey Engel and Tricia Saylor, the Eastin girls earned a D3 record for the Saints in the 200 medley relay (1:46.57). Junior Lizzie Saylor joined Engel and the Eastins for the victory in the 400 free relay (3:33.07).
Engel set the other two D3 records in sweeping the sprint free events (50 free, 22.53; 100 free, 48.96).
La Serna's relay of senior Gaby Pierandozzi, sophomore Michaela Torres, senior Melissa Lopez and junior Alyssa Sher prevented a Crean Lutheran sweep with their first-place 1:40.54 effort in the 200 free relay. Shew picked up individual titles in the 200 free (1:53.07) and 100 breast (1:04.64).
Flintridge Prep sophomore Madi Witt claimed the diving title, scoring 538.00 points.
The J.W. North Huskies scored 272 points to claim the team title. Viewpoint finished in second with 207 points. Fighting for third through fifth places were Laguna Beach (164), Buckley (161) and Woodcrest Christian (159).
North was led by senior Kyle Perez, who took charge in both the 500 free (4:33.17) and 200 IM (1:54.22). He anchored the winning 400 free relay of junior Noah Schlenk, sophomore Cristian Moncayo and junior Austin Borja (3:12.94). Sedtavut Nilaad, a sophomore, and senior Edgar Zetina joined Schlenk and Borja for the 200 free win with their 1:28.11.
Viewpoint's John Brody capped his career with victories in the 50 (21.74) and 100 free (47.32). Other double-event champions included Laguna Beach freshman Erik Juliusson (200 free, 1:40.68; 100 back, 52.79) and Buckley senior Daniel Primachenko (100 breast, 58.17; 100 fly 52.36). Primachenko, along with classmate Jess Walia, junior Austin Wilson and sophomore Vincent Seildler, was tops in the 200 medley relay (1:38.72).
First place in the diving competition went to Harry Lubowe, a senior at Sage Hill, who scored 451.60 points.
