COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, February 28. SEVEN boys records fell during the Maryland 4A/3A Swimming Championships Feb. 22-23 at the University of Maryland-College Park. Walter Johnson claimed the boys team title, and Wootton was the top girls squad.
The boys record-setting onslaught began with the very first event of the competition--the 200 medley relay. Quince Orchard's squad of juniors Alvin Wang and Andrew Mann, with seniors Jeremy Liu and Jake Engel, combined for a 1:37.94.
Winston Churchill's 200 free relay of seniors Steve Ge and Austin Cole, plus juniors Kevin Gu and Harrison Gu lowered the standard set the team set last year (1:28.27) with their 1:27.51. The quartet also placed first in the 400 free relay with their 3:13.92.
Three swimmers set state records and collected a second victory in addition. Ben Lawless, a junior at Northern, set a state record 1:40.59 in the 200 free and also captured the 500 free (4:30.55). Montgomery Blair senior Jack Foster posted a state record 1:53.16 in the 200 IM and posted a winning 53.27 in the 100 back. And the sprint free titles went to Walter Johnson's Barry Mangold. The senior set a state record 21.33 in the 50 free and earned a second title in the 100 free (47.73).
Two other state records fell to Einstein sophomore Rory Lewis in the 100 fly (51.06) and Austin Dickey, a Wootton senior, in the 100 breast (57.28).
Walter Johnson's 274 points gave them the team title, with Montgomery Blair second (204)--and Richard Montgomery (179), Winston Churchill (174) and Wootton (168) in a close battle for third through fifth.
Highlighting the girls action were double event champions Anna Kolanowski and Charlotte Meyer, both seniors. Kolanowski, swimming for Sherwood, conquered both the 100 and 200 free (52.12 and 1:53.21). Meyer, who will graduate from Walt Whitman this summer, claimed the 200 IM (2:07.66) and the 500 free (5:02.93). Kolanowski also anchored Sherwood's winning 400 free relay of freshman Morgan Hill with seniors Megan Conrad and Kylie Sheapp (3:36.57).
Also collecting individual victories were Winston Churchill senior Michelle Illig (50 free, 24.42), Sherwood freshman Morgan Hill (100 fly, 57.06), Walter Johnson junior Natsumi Horikawa (100 back, 58.14) and Walt Whitman senior Audrey Gould (100 breast, 1:06.72).
Wootton's relay of juniors Kristina Li, Jessica Chen and Scarlett Sun, plus sophomore Emily Zhang, took home the 200 medley relay title in 1:49.70. Richard Montgomery's quartet of freshmen Audrey Richter, Sophie El-Masry and Kelsey Song, with junior Michelle Nguyen, put together a winning 1:39.86 in the 200 free relay.
