SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, February 11. BRIGHTON senior Long Gutierrez added his name to the Utah state record book again this year, setting an individual state record, one district mark and helping his 400 free relay to a state record.
Gutierrez bettered his 48.89 mark from last year in the 100 fly with this year's effort of 48.68. In the 200 IM, he took down his 5A mark in cruising to a 1:52.57. Jake Taylor still holds the overall state standard (1:51.74 from 2009). Gutierrez led off the state record-setting 400 free relay (3:10.51) with classmate Hunter O'Neal and freshmen Brian O'Neal and Brock Harries. The quartet also captured the 200 free relay (1:27.34).
Those efforts, plus team depth, led Brighton to a commanding victory with 382 points. Lehi placed second (225), with Cottonwood (206), Lone Peak (172.5) and Kearns (156) rounding out the top five teams.
In fact, seniors grabbed all the individual team titles this year on the boys side:
* Pleasant Grove's Nathan Bramhall set a 5A mark in the 100 breast, improving on his 2012 mark of 59.34 with this year's 57.54. The time was just 1-tenth off the state mark set in 1979 by Timpview's David Lundberg. He also was first in the 50 free (21.20).
* Trevor Blackburn, from Lehi, closed out his high school career with first place in the 100 back (52.76). He also led off the Lehi 200 medley relay to victory in 1:40.42, along with sophomores Tyler Blackburn and Gavin Doel, plus senior Jared Smith.
* Cottonwood's Jordan Dahle captured both the 100 and 200 free (45.96 and 1:41.37).
* Jarren Brinton, representing West Jordan, scored a 4:41.83 triumph in the 500 free.
Brighton also claimed the girls team title, scoring 311.5 points to Bingham's 288.5. Lone Peak was a close third (274), followed by West's 204 and Alta's 171.
West freshman Autumn Wolfgram climbed to the top of the podium stand twice, courtesy of her wins in the 100 fly (57.55) and 200 free (1:54.65). Autumn's sister, Amelia, a junior, grabbed the 100 back (57.51). The Wolfgram sisters, with sophomore Grace Goddard and freshman J.C. White, put together a winning 200 medley relay (1:50.33).
Lone Pine's quartet of sophomore Katie Smith, junior Jordan Verdejo--plus seniors Rachel Hubert and Samantha Scoresby--claimed top honors in both free relays (200 free, 1:39.20; 400 free, 3:35.34). Hubert scored a first-place in the 500 free with her 5:07.55.
Copper Hills senior Kristine Pataray finished just ahead of Amelia Wolfgram in the 50 free, coming out 8-hundredths ahead for the victory (24.20). Pataray also had a close race in the 100 free, defeating Lone Pine's Scoresby, 52.87-53.09. Brianna Francis, an Alta senior, also posted two first-place times in both the 100 breast (1:03.63) and 200 IM (2:04.52).
