|LAS VEGAS, Nevada, May 22. EIGHT state records fell during the Nevada State High School Swimming and Diving Championships, which were held May 19 in Las Vegas.
Five records fell during the girls portion of the meet, with three additional times just barely missing the standard.
Coronado's Sammy Harrison clocked 4:49.82 in the 500 free to set a new state record in that event, and came within 9-hundredths of a second standard in the 200 free with her winning 1:49.72. Olivia Barker from Bishop Gorman posted a record-setting 54.66 in the 100 fly and added a win in the 100 back (56.55).
Boulder City's Alex Hubel missed two state standards by a total of 14-hundredths. In the 50 free, her 23.54 fell 6-hundredths shy of the state record, and her 50.84 for the 100 free fell just 8-hundredth off the mark.
Records also were broken in all three of the relay events. Bishop Gorman's team of Anne Boodt, Lindsey Englestead, Barker and Catie Miller cruised to a 1:47.02 in the 200 medley relay. Later in the meet, Marley Maluafiti and Amy Lubawy joined Barker and Miller for a 1:36.98 in the 200 free relay. Hubel anchored Boulder City's record-setting 400 free relay (3:29.71) with Megan Purdy Rachael Grothe and Cori Molisee.
Mallory Harris from Silverado earned a victory in the 100 breast with her 1:04.12, and Bishop Gorman's Miller collected a win in the 200 IM (2:03.90). In the diving competition, Ally Concepcion of Bishop Manogue took top honors with 440.95 points.
Bishop Gorman's team emerged with the team victory with its 132.5 points. Boulder City finished second (99), followed by Coronado (75), Douglas (43) and Reno (37).
Coronado's Jacob Luna was the only boys' individual state record-setter with his 48.72 in the 100 fly. Luna also topped the field in the 200 IM (1:50.63).
Boulder City earned the team title, scoring 108 points. Dylan Bunch touched first in both the 200 and 500 free (1:42.12 and 4:32.07), and Joey Gebhart nabbed a win in the 100 back (52.26). All three of Boulder City's relay teams were victorious, two with record-setting times. The Eagles lowered marks in the 200 medley relay with the quartet of Gebhart, Gunner Braden, Cory Molisee and Jeff Grasso (1:34.51); and the 200 free relay, with Jeremy Estes joining Molisee, Grasso and Braden for a 1:25.83. Bunch, Braden, Jared Smith and Gebhart clocked a 3:10.04 in the 400 free relay.
Green Valley came in second with 80 points, followed by Coronado (72) coming out ahead of Palo Alto (70) and McQueen taking fifth (46).
Green Valley's Thomas Meek claimed first in the 50 free (21.24). Meek lost out on a second victory in the 100 free by 1-hundredth, 46.92-46.93, thanks to a come-from-behind swim by Patrick McCrillis from McQueen. Kyle Scalise's 57.51 in the 100 breast earned him first place in that event.
The brother duo of Brayden and T.C. Greenwald from Coronado finished 1-2 with scores of 408.95 and 406.40, respectively.
