|SANTA CLARA, California, May 16. TOM Kremer finished out his high school swimming career by setting two district records during the CIF Central Coast Sectional Championships May 11-12 in Santa Clara.
The Sacred Heart Prep senior clocked 47.91 in the boys 100 yard back and 47.12 in the prelims of the 100 fly. Kremer came back in finals with a 47.86, good for first.
Five individuals also lowered district records: Kremer's teammate, Ally Howe (girls 100 back prelims, 53.11); Palo Alto's Jasmine Tosky (girls 200 free, 1:43.26) and Byron Sanborn (boys 100 breast, 55.29 in prelims); Bellarmine's Sam Shimomura (boys 200 free, 1:35.86) and Valley Christian's Michael Nuna (boys 500 free, 4:18.26).
Sanborn finished second in the 100 breast finals to St. Francis sophomore Curtis Ogren, 55.71-55.74. Ogren also was victorious in the 200 IM (1:48.59). Other boys champions included Mitch Hamilton of Bellarmine (50 free, 20.87), Ian Burns from Saratoga (100 free, 45.95) and Colin Zeng of Kings (1-meter diving, 629.75).
Tosky claimed a second title with her 52.36 in the 100 fly. Rachel Acker, a senior at Gunn, swept the sprint free events with times of 22.79 in the 50 and 48.98 in the 100 free. Also placing first were Mitty's Charlotte Ruby (500 free, 4:52.20) and Milpitas' Alexa Cacao (1-meter diving, 440.15 points). In two very close races, Bellarmine's Leah Goldman, a sophomore, touched out her teammate, senior Madison Gebhard, 1:04.67-1:04.69. And Woodside senior Alicia Grima emerged on top in the 200 IM over Howe, 1:58.52-1:58.61.
Bellarmine swept the boys relay events, featuring a district record 1:23.57 in the 200 free relay with the squad of Shimomura, senior Stephen Shilling, freshman Cooper Burrill and Hamilton. Sacred Heart Prep's team of juniors Scott Jollymour and Bret Hinrichs, along with seniors Mackey McGibben and Kremer, followed a mere 4-hundredths behind (1:23.63).
In the 200 medley relay, the quartet of junior Matt Webster and Jackson Locke--along with sophomore Timothy Kou and Burrill--combined for a 1:33.85. And Shimomura, Shilling, Locke and Hamilton collaborated for a 3:02.12 clocking in the 400 free relay.
Two district marks fell in girls relay events. Bellarmine's 200 medley relay of Goldman, with seniors Madison Gebhard, Naomi Thomas and Kristen Brennan, set a 1:44.17 in the 200 medley relay. Gunn's 400 free relay of seniors Acker, Julia Ama and Casey Lincoln, along with freshman Jenna Campbell, combined for a 3:23.06 in the 400 free relay. Sophomore Gabrielle Bethke joined Acker, Ama and Lincoln for a second Gunn triumph in the 200 free relay.
Gunn took home the girls first-place team trophy with 266 points, ahead of Archbishop Mitty (242), Palo Alto (173), Bellarmine (162) and Pioneer (160). On the boys side, Bellarmine finished comfortably ahead with 389.5 points with Palo Alto second (218), Sacred Heart Prep third (172.5), Los Gatos fourth (124) and The King's Academy fifth (115.5).
