AUBURN, Alabama, December 3. THE 2011 portion of the 2011-12 high school swimming championship season came to a close with the Alabama State High School Swimming and Diving Championships Dec. 2-3 in Auburn. The meet was held in short course yards.
Girls
Hoover High School, led by the state record-setting efforts of senior Angelica Chapman and its 400 free relay, emerged as the team champions with 252 points. Chapman lowered the 100 fly state mark to 55.63 and also captured the 200 IM in 2:06.27. Seniors Claire Williamson and Natalie Swindle, along with freshman Allison Smith, joined Chapman in the 400 free relay to set a state record 3:35.08; they also captured the 200 free relay with their 1:39.82.
Grissom took second with 165 points, just ahead of St. Paul's Episcopal (157) and Fairhope (143). Auburn came in fifth with 129 points.
Homewood sophomore Genny Pittman was victorious in the 50 free, posting a 23.68. She held off Fairhope sophomore Hannah Legg for the 100 back title, 55.66-55.72. Also enjoying championship titles were Spain Park sophomore Madeline Held (100 free, 52.17), UMS-Wright's Paige Madden (200 free, 1:51.60), Tuscaloosa County junior Kelly Berger (500 free, 4:59.24) and Auburn senior Carly Bowles (100 breast, 1:05.40).
Grissom and Homewood fought it out in the 200 medley relay, with Grissom's team of seventh-grader Chloe Hui, eighth-grader Jesse Sabio and seniors Hannah Busk and Katie Toth defeating Homewood's squad of Pittman, sophomore Samantha Riha plus seniors Savannah Wright and Mary Cash, 1:52.09-1:52.14).
Boys
McGill-Toolen Catholic High School was the top boys team, collecting 232 points to Bob Jones' 177, Fairhope's 171, Auburn's 168 and Huntsville's 157.
McGill-Toolen junior Will Glass was the only state record-setter this year on the boys' side, cruising to a 49.61 in the 100 back. He also took first in the 100 fly (49.38) and was a part of McGill-Toolen's winning relays. The 200 medley relay of junior Will Anderson, freshman Jackson Algiers, Glass and senior Mitchell Roubion captured first with their 1:38.35. Senior Drew Priede and freshman Russell Noletto joined Anderson and Glass for the 400 free relay victory in 3:15.14.
Bob Jones' team of seniors Kent Fellows and Mitch Deaton, junior Martin Wang and eighth-grader Derek Sander put together a 1:29.42 for their 200 free relay triumph. Fellows took first in the 100 free (47.08).
Spain Park junior Will Freeman grabbed a pair of individual titles in the 200 free (1:40.11) and 500 free (4:33.55). UMS-Wright's Marion Brutkiewicz also nabbed two titles, posting first-place times in both the 200 IM (1:54.54) and 100 breast (57.13). Freeman's classmate at Spain Park, Corey Holmes, sprinted to the 50 free title with his 21.04.
