WINNETKA, Illinois, November 22. GLENBROOK South junior Olivia Smoliga bettered two individual state records and Oak Park Fenwick's relays also set two new standards at the Illinois Girls State High School Championships Nov. 18-19 in Winnetka. The meet was contested in short course yards.
Smoliga powered to new marks in the 50 free (22.55) and 100 free (48.92). Fenwick's 200 medley relay of sophomore Maggie Sheean, junior Haley Wickham, sophomore Mimi Schneider and senior Maureen Barron combined for a 1:43.39; sophomore Paulina Kaminski joined with Schneider, Wickham and Barron to lower the 400 free relay mark to 3:25.22. They also captured the 200 free relay in 1:34.04.
Rachel Stoehr, a senior at Lake Forest, was a double-event champion in the 200 free (1:49.16) and 500 free (4:50.14). Also claiming event titles were Downers Grove sophomore Gabby Sims in the 100 back (55.50), Fenwick's Kaminski in the 100 breast (1:03.96) and Schneider in the 100 fly (53.57) and St. Charles East senior Emma Smith in the 200 IM (2:02.82). Erin Purdy, a senior at Deerfield, scored 405.95 points to take charge of the diving competition.
Winnetka New Trier edged Oak Park Fenwick, 177-162, for the championship. Rosary's 136.5 points was good for the third spot, followed closely by Loyola Academy's 126. Glenbrook South took fifth with 97 points.
