High School State Championships: Connecticut Girls

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, November 23. FOUR individual and two relay state records were broken at the Connecticut Girls State High School Championships Nov. 18-19 in New Haven. The diving event was held in Hamden on the 18th, and swimming followed the next day. Greenwich captured the team title with 480.5 points, ahead of New Canaan (431.5), Wilton (371), Darien (331.5) and Trumbull (306).

Greenwich senior Lauren Church grabbed the 100 back state record with her 55.11. Church was also a member of Greenwich's two state record-setting relays. Church partnered with sophomore Katie Evans, senior Morgan Karetnick and junior Madeline Dunn for a 1:45.26 clocking in the 200 medley relay; Karentnick and Church, together with senior Sam and sophomore Kim Hill, combined for a 3:30.40 in the 400 free relay.

Amity Regional spoiled Greenwich's bid for a trifecta of relay wins by just 1-hundredth in the 200 free relay. The team of freshmen Madeline Snow and Dana Chung plus juniors Anna Lee and Dana Grindall outswam Greenwich's squad of Dunn, Sam and Kim Hill and freshman Porter Carlson, 1:39.02-1:39.03. Just 7-hundredths back in third was Wilton's group of seniors Kaylin Moss and Morgan Scarth plus juniors Grace Hendee and Caroline O'Brien.

Moss set an individual state record in the 100 breast (1:02.96), as did Grindall (100 fly, 54.20) and Pomperaug senior Elizabeth McDonald (100 free, 50.39). McDonald also took charge in the 50 free (23.28), and Moss nabbed a second win in the 200 IM (2:04.34). Rounding out the individual titlists was Ledyard junior Jessica Hespeler, who took the 200 free (1:50.19) and 500 free (4:56.25). Katie Warburg, a Wilton senior, captured the 1-meter event with her 454.90 points.
