High School State Championships: Wisconsin Girls Divisions 1 and 2

MADISON, Wisconsin, November 14. NINE state records–six in Division 2 competition–fell Nov. 9-10 at the Wisconsin Girls Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet took place at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison.

Division 1
By just six points, Waukesha South/Mukwonago took the team title over Arrowhead, 279-273. Cedarburg's 191 points gave them the third position. Middleton emerged on top over Verona Area, 167-160, for fourth.

Verona freshman Beata Nelson bettered two state standards. Her 22.97 erased Cortnee Adams' 1998 time of 23.00, and her 53.73 lowered Mackenzie Buss' 55.25 set last year. Buss, competing for Shawano/Bonduel, also went under her record swim, placing second in 54.52.

Waukesha South's Abby Jagdfeld, a junior, stroked to a 1:47.67 in the 200 free which took down Aja van Hout's 2010 record of 1:48.09. Jagdfeld gained victory a second time in the 100 free (50.54), and led off the first-place 400 free relay with sophomore Molly Manchon, sophomore Natalie Clausen and junior Kaersten Meitz (3:25.38).

Meitz also scored valuable points for Waukesha South with her 4:52.92 first-place time in the 500 free. Others who were able to add 20 points to their team's total by coming in first were Arrowhead sophomore Lindsay Adamski (100 breast, 1:01.98); Corrin Van Lanen, a Pulaski sophomore (100 fly, 55.60); and Katie Drabot, a Cedarburg freshman (200 IM, 2:00.23).

Adamski contributed to Arrowhead's winning 200 medley relay (1:44.44) with seniors Taylor Teske and Miranda Helbig, plus junior Mary Warren. Warrant then joined freshman Kelly Jacob, sophomore Maddie Barta and senior Katie Duranso to put together a 1:35.35, good for first place in the 200 free relay.

Division 2
Shorewood High School was the top of the field in the Division 2 portion of the state meet, scoring 255 points for the win. Milton came in second (217), followed by Grafton (193), Fort Atkinson (133.5) and Eisenhower (130).

Shorewood was led by two Division 2 state record setters. Junior Kristin Malone bettered two marks in the 100 and 200 yard free (50.28 and 1:48.83). The 100 free erased Beckie Thompson's 2007 mark of 50.64, and the 200 time took out Kelsey Hojan-Clark's 2009 standard of 1:49.13. Sophomore Rachel Munson destroyed Anna Meinholz' 2011 standard of 1:03.06 with her 1:01.37 in the 100 breast.

Milton junior Bridgette Alexander lowered the 100 back state time to 55.45, taking away Siri Smits' 2008 mark of 55.83. She also topped the field in the 200 IM with her 2:04.54. In the diving event, Whitnall senior Rachel Stave put together 497.30 points for a state record.

Alexander anchored Milton's 400 free relay, which set a new state record 3:29.26. She was aided by junior Chelsea Calhoon, plus seniors Katelyn and Abby Holmquist. The quartet also took top honors in the 200 free relay (1:36.69).

There was a fierce battle for the top spot in the 200 medley relay. Grafton's quartet of junior Stephanie Haebig, sophomores Samantha Senczyszyn and Rachel Bauer, and freshman Natalie Keshemberg emerged 11-hundredths ahead of Shorewood's junior Melissa Clausen, Munson, senior Ellen Stello and freshman Eva Jorn, 1:48.47-1:48.59.

Shorewood's Stello took first in the 500 free in 4:58.34. Sturgeon Bay senior Savanna Townsend claimed the 50 free crown with her 23.74, but fell short of a second title in the 100 fly, coming up 4-hundredths short of McFarland freshman Rina Krupsky, 57.01-57.04.
