MADISON, Wisconsin, November 17. THREE state records were bettered during the Wisconsin Girls Division 1 and 2 Championships, held Nov. 11-12 in Madison at the University of Wisconsin. The meets were conducted in short course yards.
Division 1
Mackenzie Buss, a junior at Shawano Community/Bonduel, lowered the state record in the 100 back to 55.25. The previous mark, set in 2004 by Andrea Boritzke, was 55.39. And Muskego senior Sami Pochowski posted a 1:01.72 in the 100 breast, bettering the time she swam last year of 1:02.07. Pochowski also captured the 200 free with her 1:48.41.
Arrowhead senior Haley Pietila splashed her way to first-place finishes in both the 100 free (51.15) and 200 IM (2:04.21). Natalie Johnson, a junior from Cedarburg, dueled Sara Brzozowski, a senior at Brookfield East, to a 4:57.74-4:57.86 victory in the 500 free. Other individual event champions were Mary Warren, a sophomore at Arrowhead, in the 50 free (23.37); Kayla Skenandore, a senior from Waukesha South, in the 100 fly (55.14) and Rachel Margis, a senior from Racine Park, in the diving competition (438.15 points).
Arrowhead's team of senior Kate Jones, freshman Lindsay Adamski, junior Miranda Helbig and Warren took control of the 200 medley relay and won in 1:44.35. Freshman Maddie Barta and junior Katie Duranso joined Pietila and Warren for a second Arrowhead triumph in the 200 free relay (1:35.89). Waukesha South's quartet of Jagdfeld, freshmen Moly Manchon and Natalie Clausen, and senior Sara Zemanovkc combined for a win in the 400 free relay (3:28.61).
Waukesha South squeaked out a 2-point victory for the team title over Arrowhead, 293-291. Madison Memorial finished in third (175). In another tight battle, Middleton earned a single-point victory over Muskego for fourth place, 163-162.
Division 2
One of the most exciting races of this young high school season came in the 100 breast. Three swimmers bettered the existing state record, with senior Anna Meinholz of Catholic Memorial posting a 1:03.06 for the win. Samantha Senczyszyn, a Grafton freshman, was just 1-hundredth behind (1:03.07), and Emma Bare, a Fort Atkinson sophomore, came in third with her 1:03.10. Kate Criter, who set the record last year at 1:03.28, placed fourth this year in 1:04.13.
New Berlin West's Madison Tew ended her first year of high school competition with victories in both the 200 free (1:52.42) and 500 free (5:02.95) to become the only double-event champion of the Division 2 meet.
New Berlin Eisenhower senior Alli Bedford traded first and second places with Shorewood sophomore Kristin Malone in the sprint freestyles. In the 50, Bedford came out on top in an exciting duel with Malone, 23.43-23.50. Malone came back in the 100 to score a 51.33-52.37 victory over Bedford. Another close contest, this time in the 100 fly, saw DeForest senior Leah Winckler come out on top over Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol junior Savanna Townsend, 56.90-57.00.
Katelyn Holmquist led a 1-2-3 Milton sweep of the 100 back with her 56.08. Placing second was sophomore Bridgette Alexander (56.39) and taking third was Alexander's classmate, Chelsea Calhoun (58.38). Alexander also triumphed in the 200 IM (2:05.30). Rachel Stave, a junior at Whitnall, topped the diving field with her 444.20 points.
The Milton team of Katelyn Holmquist, Alexander, Calhoun and Abby Holmquist took first in both the 200 free (1:37.93) and 400 free (3:33.17) relays. Shorewood's 200 medley relay squad of sophomore Melissa Clausen, freshman Rachel Munson, junior Ellen Stello and Malone clocked 1:47.74 for their victory.
Milton's team was on top of the team standings with 236 points, with Shorewood second with 193 points. DeForest claimed third (159) with Plymouth (153) and New Berlin Eisenhower (147) close behind. Fort Atkinson (144) was three points out of fifth.
