GRAND FORKS, North Dakota, November 16. CENTURY High School, fueled by two state record-setting relays, captured the team title at the North Dakota Girls State High School Championships Nov. 11-12. Century scored 352 points, with Fargo North close behind in second with 338 points. Minot edged West Fargo for third, 227-226, with Williston taking fifth with 201 points. The meet was conducted in short course yards.
The Century 200 medley relay team of freshman Dani Bergeson, junior Veronica Herrmann, senior Emily Smallbeck and junior Jarren Fallgatter opened the meet with a 1:47.97, erasing the 1:48.32 state mark that Minot posted in 2008. Senior Cassie Walth and junior McKenzie Jeske joined Bergeson and Fallgatter to end the meet with a state record 3:36.47 in the 400 free relay. Century's 2009 team had set the previous standard at 3:37.03.
Minot senior Courtney Funk lowered the state record in the 50 free to 23.36, bettering Lexie Halberstadt's 2009 mark of 23.52. Funk doubled in the 100 free with her 51.74. Grand Forks Central senior Ali Church also nabbed two wins in the 200 free (1:50.28) and 500 free (5:01.30).
Also winning individual events were Bergeson in the 200 IM (2:07.35), Jamestown senior Erin Hart in the 100 back (57.82), Fargo North freshman Elizabeth Roche in the 100 breast (1:05.59) and West Fargo sophomore Danica Datt in the 100 fly (57.01). Century swept the relay wins with their 1:40.95 in the 200 free relay. Alex Lind captured the diving event with her 430.70 points.
