High School State Championships: Iowa Girls

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa, November 5. Two seniors–Pleasant Valley's Gabbie Stecker and Mason City's Emma Sougstad–lowered two individual standards each during the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Championships Nov. 2-3. Stecker added a relay state mark as well.

Stecker posted a 1:49.64 in the 200 yard free and 4:52.91 in the 500 free to rewrite the record book in those events. She also anchored Pleasant Valley's state record-setting 400 free relay (3:31.31) with sophomores Evan Hundley, Nicole Oppel and Ashton Ehrecke. Junior Meredith Gorman joined Ehrecke, Huntley and Stecker for a victory in the 200 free relay (1:36.15).

Sougstad lowered the 200 IM mark to 2:00.33 and also was victorious in the 100 fly (55.25). She led off Mason City's 400 free relay with a state record 51.08 for the 100 free. Another state standard fell to Katharine Ross, a senior at Des Moines North, with her 1:01.18 in the 100 breast.

Individual event champions included Waukee sophomore Maddie Gehrke (50 free, 23.34), Cedar Falls senior Aftin Phyfe (100 free, 51.54) and Ames junior Sara Bentley (100 back, 56.89). Ames junior Maggie James scored 512.80 points to easily win the 1-meter diving competition.

Dowling Catholic's quartet of seniors Emily Tuazon, Hannah Aldridge and Anna Bump, along with junior McKenna Lynch, put together a winning 1:47.44 in the 200 medley relay.

Ames' 274 points gave them the team title, ahead of Pleasant Valley (224), West Des Moines Valley (192), Dowling Catholic (180.5) and Cedar Falls (165).

The Iowa boys state high school championships will be held in February.
