USA’s Cassidy Krug Wins Silver at Pan American Games

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 29. CASSIDY Krug (Coraopolis, Pa./Stanford, Calif.) captured the silver medal in the women's 3-meter springboard at the Pan American Games on Friday night, and teammate Kassidy Cook (The Woodlands, Texas) placed fourth in that same event.

Krug scored 372.65 points for the silver, with Mexico's Laura Sanchez edging her by 1.95 points for gold. Paola Espinosa, also of Mexico, won bronze.

"I was calm and excited all at the same time, and it was really fun. This was the best I've ever done in an international competition, and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to compete here," Krug said.

The competition was close throughout the five-dive contest, with four different divers leading at various stages.

Krug scored 81 points on her inward 2 ½ pike to lead after round one, but dropped to third after her second dive. She jumped back up to second after round three and held the lead heading into the fifth round.

"I was trying not to watch the scores, but I could hear the crowd and knew it was a close contest," Krug said.

With Krug leading Sanchez by 4.05 points, both divers were to perform a front 2 ½ with a twist in the final round. Sanchez dove first and scored 78 points, with Krug to follow as the final competitor of the night. Krug earned 72 points, allowing Sanchez to pick up Mexico's sixth diving gold of the Games.

"(Diving last) was an exciting position to be in, but I was a little nervous," Krug said. "I wanted to win, but this competition was so fun. I've never seen such a fun crowd."

Cook, who will compete with Krug in the synchronized 3-meter final on Saturday, scored 348.90 points to finish fourth after finishing seventh in the preliminaries.

"I was tight in prelims and was thinking too much. In the finals, I was much more relaxed and composed. I was having fun, singing and dancing. I'm very happy with how I did," Cook said.

Also on Friday, Thomas Finchum (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Drew Livingston (The Woodlands, Texas) finished fourth in men's synchronized 10-meter, scoring 391.92 points. German Sanchez and Ivan Garcia picked up gold with 479.88 points, while Cuba's Jeinkler Aguirre and Jose Guerra scored 447.57 points for silver. Canadians Kevin Geyson and Eric Sehn were third with 399.93 points.

Finchum will compete in the individual 10-meter contest Saturday, the final day of diving competition at the Pan American Games.
