Nick McCrory, Cassidy Krug, Troy Dumais, Kristian Ipsen Close Down U.S. Diving Nationals With Wins

LOS ANGELES, California, August 15. NICK McCrory (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham, N.C.) and Cassidy Krug (Coraopolis, Pa.) closed out the 2011 AT&T National Diving Championships with individual titles on men's 10-meter and women's 3-meter on Sunday, and Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Austin, Texas) and Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.) won the men's synchronized 3-meter gold.

McCrory, who finished sixth at last month's World Championships, led the entire men's 10-contest, finishing with 497.35 points after scoring 90-plus points on his first three dives, including 91.20 points on his inward 3 ½ that earned 10s from two judges. He also earned 91.80 on his new armstand, a double back somersault with 2 ½ twists.

"Fortunately I was able to recover from worlds and get ready for nationals. I was feeling a little fatigued today, but I'm glad I competed," McCrory said.

David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind.), the world silver medalist, finished second with 469.90 points and Ben Grado (Morrison, Colo./Tucson, Ariz.) scored 431.05 points for bronze, his best finish at nationals.

Krug scored 318.20 points to win a close women's 3-meter contest that came down to the final dive, with just two points separating first and third with one dive to go. All three contenders: leader Summer Allman (Lansing, Mich.), Christina Loukas (Riverwoods, Ill./The Woodlands, Texas) and Krug were performing the same dive, a front 2 ½ with a twist. Krug performed it best, earning 8s and 8.5s for 75 points and her highest scoring dive in the finals. Allman ended up second with 315.75 points, and Loukas took third with 306.50 points.

"I had a good meet, but I wish I'd done a little better on some things. There were a few things that could have been smoother," Krug said. "Every competition is more experience, and winning is a great confidence booster."

Dumais and Ipsen dominated the men's 3-meter synchro final, finishing with 459.00 points – nearly 70 ahead of the second-place team of Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla.) and Drew Livingston (The Woodlands, Texas), who finished with 390.03. Dwight Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Austin, Texas) and Justin Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Orlando, Fla.) took third with 378.63 points.

Dumais and Ipsen finished just out of medal contention, placing fourth, at the World Championships. Dumais said their last dive, a reverse 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists, made the difference.

"The only difference between this meet and nationals was our last dive. At worlds, I came off the board earlier than Kristian. We got 86 points on that dive today and we got 73 points at Worlds. In a synchro event, that's a big difference," Dumais said.

Dumais' team, Longhorn Aquatics, was declared the overall men's team champion. Indiana Diving won both the women's team and overall team titles. High point award winners were Grado and Amanda Burke (Southampton, Pa.).
