AUSTIN, Texas, March 27. THE California Golden Bears closed out an amazing day of swimming with their fourth men’s 400-yard medley relay win in five years at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.

The foursome of Ryan Murphy (44.91), Chuck Katis (50.46), Marcin Tarczynski (45.43) and Seth Stubblefield (41.86) turned in a swift time of 3:02.66. That performance downed a historic pool record of 3:02.94 previously owned by the dynamic Texas quartet of Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, Ian Crocker and Neil Walker.

Florida’s Corey Main (46.21), Eduardo Solaeche-Gomez (52.10), Marcin Cieslak (44.65) and Bred deBorde (41.81) picked up second place honors, just edging Texas’ Kip Darmody (45.27), Imri Ganiel (52.79), Tripp Cooper (44.47) and Caleb Weir (42.26) as the Longhorns took third in 3:04.79.

Georgia (3:05.50), USC (3:05.91), Florida State (3:06.33), Michigan (3:07.61) and Alabama (3:07.68) closed out the championship finale.

Louisville (3:07.12), NC State (3:07.38), Indiana (3:08.02), Missouri (3:08.08), Penn State (3:08.40), Tennessee (3:09.74) and UNLV (3:09.78) comprised the clean finishes in the consolation heat with ninth through 15th-place efforts.

Ohio State’s relay became the 14th relay disqualification in just the first day in what has been a huge storyline of the meet thus far. Although, it was the first due to a 15-meter infraction by backstroker Garrett Trebilcock and not due to a relay exchange.

Earlier during prelims, six relays were disqualified due to exchanges, including title contender Arizona and their amazing breaststroker Kevin Cordes. Cordes jumped early, but had posted a 49.95 breaststroke split.
