Navy Still Leads at Patriot League Champs, Boston University Makes Big Move

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, February 20. STEPHANIE Nasson and Sarah Hargrave set the stage for another solid day by Boston University by finishing 1-2 in the Women’s 500 Freestyle at the 2014 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships at Lejuene Hall.

The Terriers rode that momentum in the opening event of the second day to move into second place in both the men’s and women’s standings through 14 events. The Boston University men notched a runnerup finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay and MunHon Lee finished third in the Men’s 200 IM.

Host Navy continues to lead both fields and also delivered another strong performance. Thomas Duvall, Alex Nickell and Riley Mita led a podium sweep for the Mids in the Men’s 500 Freestyle. Duvall’s 4:15.86 performance set pool, league and meet records.

Navy also took first and third in both the Men’s 50 Freestyle and 1-meter Diving. Junior Dain Bomberger broke a 10-year record with a 19.73 in the freestyle sprint and William Mayo won the diving event with 325.40 points on his six dives.

On the strength of these performances and another record-setting swim in the 200 Freestyle relay to end the night, the Mids hold a commanding lead on the men’s side with 356.5 points to the Terriers 207.

The women’s race is somewhat closer with Navy ahead of Boston University 260-211. Bucknell sits in third with 203 points.

Anna Brooks was the lone women’s champion Thursday night for the Mids with a win in the 200 IM 2:01.12. Navy did have a number of point earning top-5 finishes during the evening and also finished second to Army in the Women’s 200 Freestyle Relay.

Molly Mucciarone was a big contributor for the Black Knights, swimming the opening leg in the freestyle relay win and also proving herself the fastest woman in the pool by capturing the Women’s 50 Freestyle in 22.98.

Bucknell had a balanced effort from both the men’s and women’s teams. Amber McDonnell and Diana Hanson finished 2-3 behind Brooks in the 200 IM and Bison senior Mike Nicholson is winding down a brilliant four-year career in strong fashion with a win in the men’s 200 IM.
