San Diego State Rewrites Mountain West Conference Record Books On Day Two

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, February 20. THREE Mountain West Conference records fell at the hands of San Diego State Thursday night, while the Boise State women’s swimming and diving team passed Nevada for the team lead after day two. The Broncos are first with 276.5 points, ahead of San Diego State (239.5) and Nevada (216).

San Diego State’s Anika Apostalon (50 free, 21.76) and Mikaela Macklin (200 IM, 1:57.29) broke the Mountain West Conference record in both prelims and finals of their events, while the San Diego State 200 free relay achieved an NCAA ‘A’ cut and MWC record to highlight another fast night of swimming.

Boise State took over the lead in team scoring during Day Two of the 2014 Mountain West Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Palo Alto Aquatic Center in San Antonio, Texas with 276.5 points through eight events. San Diego State jumped into second place with 239.5 points, followed by Day One leader Nevada in third with 216. Wyoming currently sits in fourth place with 160 points and New Mexico follows in fifth with 140. UNLV is sixth in the standings with 131 points, followed by Air Force (126), San José State (104), Fresno State (93) and Colorado State (93).

San Diego State senior Mikaela Macklin established a Mountain West all-time record in the 200-yard individual medley twice on Thursday, touching the wall in 1:57.61 in the prelims, then 1:57.29 in the finals. Macklin set the previous mark of 1:57.73 at the 2013 MW Championships. Three additional swimmers recorded NCAA ‘B’ cut times in the finals. Wyoming senior Morgan Hartigan finished second at 1:58.37, followed by Nevada sophomore Yawen Li in third with a time of 1:59.16 and Wolf Pack freshman Teresa Baerens in fourth at 1:59.52.

San Diego State’s Anika Apostalon became the second Aztec on the day to set a Mountain West all-time record twice in one day. The rookie debuted in the 50-yard freestyle prelims with a 21.93 and followed it up in the finals with a 21.76. Apostalon surpassed the former time of 22.31, set by Boise State’s Amber Boucher at the 2012 MW Championships. The record sends Apostalon to the NCAA Championships in March. UNLV senior Rachel Dixon finished second with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 22.31, followed by Boise State freshman Brittany Aoyama in 22.54.

Air Force freshman Genevieve Miller ended a 10-year drought as the first Falcon to win an individual event since 2004. Miller posted a time of 4:44.19 in the 500-yard freestyle for the victory. The last Falcon to win an MW swimming event was Jaymie Van Kooten in the 100-yard butterfly at the Championship meet 10 years ago. Miller and runner-up Taylor Padington, a sophomore at Boise State, swam NCAA ‘B’ cut times, with Padington posting a 4:47.33. Padington’s teammate Felicity Cann, a freshman, placed third in 4:49.28.

New Mexico senior Megan Harper won the 3-meter springboard with a mark of 337.20. Harper is the second Lobo in three years to win the event (Ashlee Erickson, 2012). Wolf Pack senior En-tien (Grace) Huang earned her second medal of the meet with her runner-up score of 331.02, followed by Nevada teammate Krysta Palmer in third at 317.64.

San Diego State won its third straight relay of the meet on Thursday night, posting a MW record time and NCAA ‘A’ cut 1:28.65 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Boise State provisionally qualified for the national championships, taking second in 1:30.30, while UNLV finished third at 1:30.82.

Day three events begin with the 400-yard individual medley preliminaries at 11 a.m. CT. The finals competition starts at 6:30 p.m. CT with the 400-yard medley relay. The 2014 MW Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, February 22.
