Richmond Women, Massachusetts Men Lead After Day One of Atlantic 10

GENEVA, Ohio, February 19. JUST a day into the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships, and a pair of conference records took a tumble in Geneva, Ohio.

The St. Bonaventure men’s swim team had a seriously strong night, but were trumped by a deep diving group from Massachusetts with UMass up 133-100 in the men’s meet. Richmond, meanwhile, swept the two women’s events on offer on day one to grab an 80-60 lead against George Mason.

Richmond’s Maggie Pope (26.19), Mali Kobelja (28.12), Kelley Yang (23.73) and Laura Jordan (23.05) raced their way to victory in the women’s 200-yard medley relay with a top time of 1:41.09. That swim put them more than a second ahead of Fordham’s Morgan Fairclough, Kelley Carroll, Shannon Lulley and Chandler Lulley, who took second overall in 1:42.37. Rhode Island’s Emily Thomesen, Rachel Revolinski, Colette Aubin and Porshe Brown finished third overall in 1:42.65.

The Atlantic 10 conference and meet records both fell in the men’s 200-yard medley relay in a battle between St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis. St. Bonaventure’s Vatslav Lets (22.94), Matthew Schutt (25.10), Ripley Danner (21.22) and Jimmy Martin (19.48) closed the show with a 1:28.74, while SLU’s Patrick May (23.33), Stephen Hansen (24.57), Brendan Hulseman (21.94) and Zack Billingsley (19.51) clocked a 1:29.35. Both times surpassed the 1:29.43 set by St. Bonaventure well back in 2009. Massachusetts’ Hao Luong, Alex Mesisca, Chris Inglis and Wiktor Karpinski touched third in 1:30.16.

Richmond swept the women’s relay on offer on night one when Natalya Ares, Allison Titley, Molly McSweeney and Meredith Gouger took home the title in the women’s 800-yard free relay in 7:23.14. Unfortunately, splits are unavailable for Richmond. Mass’ Anna Cavanaugh, Molly Smyth, Meriza Werenski and Zoe Judd finished a close second in 7:23.27 with Duquesne’s Meghan Smith, Sam Ray, Nicole Bruneel and Line Lovberg snaring second in 7:24.84.

St. Bonaventure finished the night with a conference record relay sweep. Michael Pilyugin (1:37.00), Viachslav Shchukin (1:38.68), Ripley Danner (1:38.21) and Jimmy Martin (1:35.91) touched in 6:29.80 in the men’s 800 free relay. That blasted St. Bonnie’s 2013 mark of 6:33.68. George Mason’s Danny Camozzo, Jesse Burnley, Brandon Nestor and Joey Kelly also surpassed the previous record with a 6:32.80, while even Mass’ Brian Stiles, Ryan Bobianski, Troy Nichols and Chris Inglis put up a 6:33.67 for third to clip the previous standard.

In diving action, Massachusetts freshman Joshua Koppel rolled to victory with 303.75 points in the one-meter event. George Mason’s Nic Guttendorf took second in 267.60, while La Salle’s CJ Gimpel placed third with 248.80 points.
