Frank Dyer Sets School Record in Notre Dame Coach Tim Welsh’s Final Dual Meet

SOUTH BEND, Indiana, February 8. TODAY’S dual meet between Notre Dame’s and Cleveland State’s men’s teams had a bittersweet tinge to it, as the head coaches of both teams participated in the final dual meets of their illustrious careers.

The Fighting Irish beat the Vikings 204.5-94.5. Notre Dame head coach Tim Welsh brought his dual meet record to 324-179-1 in a 33-year career, with the only tie of his stint at Notre Dame coming last month against Northwestern. As for Cleveland State head coach Wally Morton, he ends his career with 387 wins.

According to Notre Dame Athletics, the meet gave Welsh a fitting bookend to his college career at Notre Dame. His first dual meet was against Cleveland State in 1985, which Morton’s Vikings won 71.5-41.5. Today’s meet featured a tuba playing the national anthem at Welsh’s request and video from swimmers past and present.

Senior Frank Dyer gave his coach a great sendoff, setting a team record in the first individual event of the meet, the 1000 free. Dyer’s time of 911.93 was two seconds faster than the 9:13.41 James McEldrew posted in 2012. That time stands 24th in the collegiate standings this season in the non-NCAA championship event. Dyer’s only other swim in his final dual meet was as leadoff in the 200 free relay, posting a 20.29 in the team’s 1:21.79 victory.

Colin Babcock was the only multiple winner in the men’s meet, taking the 100 free with a 46.00 in a Notre Dame 1-2-3 sweep, and in a show of diversity, won the 400 IM with a 4:05.99.

Cleveland State’s only win in the men’s meet came in the 100 backstroke, as Al Shillito posted a 51.59 to beat two Notre Dame swimmers who were also in the hunt. Jack Cobain was second with a 51.71 and Tommy Anderson took third with a 51.79.

In the women’s meet, Notre Dame won with a score of 162-124. Notre Dame All-American Emma Reaney only swam 50 yards of her primary stroke, posting a 27.99 breaststroke split in the winning 200 medley relay. She would win two individual events as well, posting a 2:01.17 in the 200 fly and 51.93 in the 100 free.
