Minnesota Men Pick Up Four Wins At Minnesota Challenge

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, February 8. THE University of Minnesota’s Minnesota Challenge kicked off last night with the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays. The meet features individuals from several midwestern colleges and gives swimmers a chance to fine-tune before their conference championship meets. Minnesota picked up four wins last night in the men’s 200 free relay, 500 free (Eric Sande, 4:27.99), 200 IM (DJ Friesch, 1:50.51) and 50 free (Derek Toomey, 19.93).

Day one of the 2014 Minnesota Challenge wrapped up tonight at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

The meet provides the ability to fine-tune things before the B1G Championships and NCAA Championships. Coach Kremer also stated that the Minnesota Challenge is a great platform for those that will not be attending the Championship meets to see how they have improved throughout the season.

Session one of the Minnesota Challenge featured primarily Gophers from the men’s swim team. Jenna Howenstein was the only Gopher to represent the women’s team in tonight’s events.

Tonight’s events included the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and the 400 medley relay.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Derek Toomey, Daryl Turner, Paul Fair, and Danny Brebrick looked strong taking first in heat two with a 1:20.14.

Eric Sande finished a solid ten seconds faster than his other competitors in three heats of the 500-yard freestyle. The freshman finished with a time of 4:27.99.

Heat 4 of 4 in the men’s 200 IM featured five Gophers in eight lanes including a first place finish by DJ Friesch who out-touched Kyler Van Swol. The two had times of 1:50.51 and 1:50.57 respectively.

The first few heats of the men’s 50-yard freestyle were utilized to for sprint times in backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. In the last head of the 50 free, Toomey swam a 19.61 for first. He was followed by Danny Brebrick, and Daryl Turner. Minnesota went 1-2-3 in the event.

The Gophers swam an eclectic 400 medley relay, in which Derek Toomey swam the breaststroke leg of the race.

The Minnesota Challenge continues tomorrow with morning and evening sessions.
