Tennessee Picks Up Commitment From Davie Nadadores’ Joshua Romany

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, February 3. JOSHUA Romany, who competes for the Davie Nadadores and represents Trinidad and Tobago internationally, called the Tennessee Volunteers today to confirm that he’s going to be a future Vol.

Romany, who has only competed in yard twice in his lifetime, has put together a pretty strong long course resume and should add to head coach Matt Kredich’s overall recruiting class quite nicely. Romany has a 23.63, 50.83, 1:52.46 set of long course meter times in the 50-100-200 meter freestyle events. He also has some butterfly ability, with a 24.69 in the 50 and a 56.56 in the 100-meter butterfly events. His 50 fly time is nearly a record for his nation, just off Joshue McLeod’s 24.43 from the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona.

“When I went to Tennessee, I felt comfortable and welcome,” Romany told Swimming World “I liked that the team is very international, and they have the Olympics in their hearts and in their minds. All of the coaches are different and diverse, and that can help me achieve my dreams.”

The World Juniors semifinalist also is expected to enroll a bit earlier, with plans of jumpstarting his collegiate career by being in Knoxville for summer school. Romany raced his way to his 50.83 time in the 100-meter free during semis of the World Junior Championships in Dubai.

With distance studs David Heron and Evan Pinion both redshirting, they’ll be coming in with the class that includes Sam McHugh, Ryan Coetzee, Peter John Stevens and Romany as the Volunteers build for the future. That could, in the end, be one of the most solid and deep freshman classes in the nation when all is said and done.
