Dartmouth In Lead After Day One Of Dartmouth Invitational

HANOVER, New Hampshire, January 24. DARTMOUTH leads both the men’s and women’s team standings after the first night of competition at the Dartmouth Invitational. The Big Green won six events tonight, highlighted by Nejc Zupan’s school record-breaking swim in the men’s 200 IM.

The Dartmouth women’s swimming and diving team finished the first day of the Dartmouth Invitational in first-place out of six teams with 344.5 points.

The Big Green began the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-Free relay, as Mary Van Metre, Siobhan Hengemuhle, Sasha Alcon and Natalia Vecerek crossed in 1:37.17, a full second ahead of UMass and Connecticut College who tied for second.

Olivia Samson gave the Green their second race win, as she finished the 500-Free in 5:02.56. Christine Kerr finished third in 5:03.64

In the 400-Medley Relay, Dartmouth placed third in 3:56.86, as Kendese Nangle, Heather Laedtke, Emily Holt and Charlotte Kamai finished two seconds behind the winner from Northeastern.

In the 50-Free, Nangle along with Amy Sun and Metre finished 2-4, giving the Big Green valuable points. Nangle’s time of 24.17 was just ahead of Sun and Metre, who finished at 24.30 and 24.31.

The Big Green finished the opening night with a third place finish in the 400-Medley relay.

The second-day of competition will resume at 9:30 a.m. at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center. The diving portion will begin at 11 a.m. at Karl Michael Pool, on the Dartmouth campus.

The Dartmouth men’s swimming and diving team finished the first day of the Dartmouth Invitational in first out of five teams with 392 points.

In the 200-IM, Nejc Zupan broke his own record from last season with a 1:49.50 finish. The Big Green also swept the event, with Aaron Athanas, Logan Briggs and Tate Ramsden finishing 2-4. Athanas’ time was 1:54.29, Briggs at 1:56.04 and Ramsden at 1:56.57.

In the 200-Free, Daniel Whitcomb, Aaron Athanas, David Harmon and Andrew North won in 1:25.18, just in front of UMass, which finished .15 seconds behind.

The Big Green swept the 500-Free, as Jun Oh won in 4:38.94. Dylan Gabel and James Thompson finished in second and third, respectively, in 4:41.32 and 4:41.62.

In the 50-Free, Whitcomb finished second in 20.90 and North placed fourth in 21.43.

Dartmouth finished with a first-place win in the 400-Medley Relay, setting a new pool record of 3:22.78. The group of James Verhagen, David Harmon, Ian Woon and Zupan smashed the competition, winning by over six seconds.

The second day of competition will resume at 9:30 a.m. at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center. The diving portion will begin at 11 a.m. at Karl Michael Pool, on the Dartmouth campus.
