Miami Sweeps Cincinnati in Oxford; Lady Redhawks on Six-Meet Win Streak

OXFORD, Ohio, January 10. MIAMI University picked up a dual meet sweep against the men and women of Cincinnati last night at the Nixon Aquatic Center. The women claimed a 177-119 victory, while the men won 162-134.

Miami’s women’s swimming and diving team wins their sixth straight meet with a 177-119 win over Cincinnati at the Nixon Aquatic Center.

The RedHawks saw ten of their swimmers and divers take first-place finishes. Senior Nikki Craft and freshman Stephanie LeMire won two individual events each, while senior Cynthia Donovan won the 50 freestyle (23.64) and contributed to a win in the 200 freestyle relay with junior Annie Marquiss and sophomores Natalie Rohr and Sara Krueger.

“It was good to get back into it,” said Coach Mark Davis, “I was really happy with the meet, especially coming off our training trip… we got out and did a great job.”

Highlighting the night were LeMire’s two wins in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.54) and the 200 breaststroke (2:20.04) and Craft’s two wins in the one-meter dive (307.95 points) and the three-meter dive (322.28 points).

Other individual first-place finishes were turned in by sophomore Katie Blodgett in the 200 butterfly (2:07.31), junior Stephanie Pearce in the 1000 freestyle (10:16.35), sophomore Betsey Zilch in the 100 butterfly (57.90) and freshman Brittany Dudzinski, who got her first college win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.79.

Krueger and Marquiss were particularly busy on the night, with Krueger placing second in the 200 freestyle (1:54.08), third in the 50 freestyle (24.19) and third in the 100 freestyle (52.73), in addition to her contributions to the 200 freestyle relay. Marquiss took two second-place finishes. One in the 50 freestyle (24.09) and and another in the 100 freestyle (52.60). She also swam with Dudzinski, sophomore Emma Szczupakiewicz and senior Nicole Wagner on the 200 medley relay team that placed second.

Wagner also took second place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.11) and the 200 breaststroke (2:23.69).

“Some of the things we’ve been working on are really coming together,” said Davis, “We’re not there yet… we still have some things to work on.”

“Somebody just steps up… it makes it a lot of fun.”

The RedHawks will next compete when they travel to Evansville, Ind. to take on the Purple Aces on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Miami Men’s Release
Miami’s men’s swimming and diving team defeated Cincinnati, 162-134, at the Nixon Aquatic Center in their first competitive action of 2014.

The RedHawks won 11 of 16 events in an impressive team effort. No RedHawks earned more than one individual win, but junior Joe Baumgartner, senior Dan Nemeth and freshman Grant Stafford each had a relay win in addition to their individual first-place finishes.

Baumgartner was a first-place finisher in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.02. He also was a second-place finisher behind Nemeth’s time of 20.99 in the 50 freestyle with a 21.22 time of his own. Baumgartner and Nemeth also had a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:24.97) with freshmen Jack Strauss and Lucas Brock.

Nemeth also was a member of Miami’s first-place finishing 200 medley relay team comprised of sophomore Heshan Unamboowe, Stafford and sophomore Evan Bader that finished with a time of 1:34.63.

Stafford continued his streak of winning an event in every meet this season by taking the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.62.

Other top finishers for the RedHawks were senior Michael Cavanaugh in the 200 butterfly (1:52.74), sophomore Chris Dieter in the 200 freestyle (1:42.00), senior Sam Flessner in the 100 backstroke (52.63), sophomore Cole Fryman in the one-meter dive (287.54 points), senior Sean Minderlein in the 1000 freestyle (9:42.12) and freshman Matthew Rigali in the 100 breaststroke (58.68).

Miami returns to action Saturday, Jan. 18, when they travel to Evansville, Ind. to take on the Evansville Purple Aces.

Cincinnati Release
The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams both fell in a dual meet at Miami (Ohio) on Thursday, Jan. 9. The women’s team fell, 177-119, while the men’s team was defeated, 162-134.

Women’s

Women’s action started with the Bearcat team of Kendra Bierman, Helena Pikhartova, Iuliia Fedoreeva and Weronika Wasiakowska scored a victory in the 200 medley relay. They finished in 1:47.46, just ahead of the RedHawks. Jessica Piper, Sammie Wheeler, Miranda Hampton and Sally Thompson placed third in 1:50.13.

Individual action kicked off with Hope Andrews placing second in the 1000 freestyle. She touched in 10:20.98, four seconds behind Miami’s Stephanie Pearce.

Jackie Keire followed with her first victory of the day, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:51.71.

The 100 backstroke followed with Bierman as the top finisher in fourth place at 58.96. Wheeler was then the top finisher in the 100 breaststroke, finishing third with a time of 1:06.16.

Fedoreeva earned a second place finish in the 200 butterfly, clocking in at 2:07.53. Wasiakowska then finished fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.57.

The Bearcats then won consecutive women’s races when Keire won the 100 frestyle and Piper won the 200 backstroke. Keire touched in 51.01 to win by over a second, while Piper clocked in 2:04.08. Hampton joined Piper with a top-three finish in the 200 backstroke, finishing third with a time of 2:07.47.

Keire picked up her third victory of the meet in the 500 free, posting a time of 4:57.91. Andrews was third in the race in 5:04.42.

Fedoreeva, Hampton and Emma Gresser placed second, third and fourth, respectively in the 100 butterfly. Fedoreeva finished in 58.53, followed by Hampton in 1:00.00 and Gresser in 1:00.68.

Individual action capped with Wheeler winning the 200 individual medley in 2:06.73.

The Bearcat team of Keire, Thompson, Fedoreeva and Wasiakowska placed second in the 200 freestyle relay to cap the swimming action, touching the wall in 1:38.07.

On the board, Amanda Coffey was UC’s top performer on the one-meter. She scored 211.27 to finish fourth. Chloe Merris was the top Bearcat on the three-meter, using a score of 224.09 to place fourth.

Men’s

Men’s action got underway with Awse Ma’aya, Dan Gilbertson, Rob Walsh and Joe Scherpenberg placing second in the 200 medley relay (1:35.96).

The first individual event of the day saw Donovan Kearns finish second in the 1,000 freestyle with at time of 9:43.85. Connor Davis was the top Bearcat in the next event, the 200 freestyle, finishing fourth in 1:44.75.

The 100 backstroke saw Ma’aya finish third in 53.30, while Trenton Harper was second as the top UC finisher in the 100 breaststroke in 59.35.

Joey Ferreri placed third in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:54.93, while Michael Palleros was the fast Bearcat in the 50 free, placing third in 22.01.

The 100 free saw Palleros earn a second place finish in 47.70 before Kearns brought home the first men’s victory of the day in the 200 backstroke. He finished in 1:53.68.

Nik Balmer had the quickest 200 breaststroke for UC, finishing in 2:09.81, while Ferreri was the fastest Bearcat in the 500 freestyle in 4:42.18. The 100 butterfly saw Ma’aya score a victory in 52.49, followed by Tyler Roeher finishing quickest for UC in the 200 individual medley (1:58.15).

The team of Walsh, Scherpenberg, Palleros and Michael Kaplan capped the day with a second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, touching the wall in 1:26.89.

Bill Magill was the top performer on the one-meter board for UC. He finished fourth with a score of 256.64. Jimmy McMahon was the top Bearcat on the three-meter board with a score of 251.55.

Next Meet

The Bearcats face a quick turnaround as they travel to Louisville on Saturday, Jan. 11. Both squads will face the host Cardinals, while the women’s team will also square off with Houston.
