Elizabeth Beisel, Pavel Sankovich Lead CollegeSwimming.com National Swimmers of the Week

CARTHAGE, Wisconsin, January 8. FLORIDA’s Elizabeth Beisel and Florida State’s Pavel Sankovich lead the way for CollegeSwimming.com’s National Swimmers of the Week.

Division I Women
Senior Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) is your Women’s Division I Philip Hunsaker CollegeSwimming.com Swimmer of the Week for her outstanding efforts in the University of Florida – Florida State dual this past weekend. Beisel posted some impressive times while sweeping the backstroke events (55.60/ 1:58.49) and completed a grueling back-to-back double with a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.24) immediately after winning the 200 back. “I knew about the UF-FSU rivalry well before I was in college. To come here, and see the stands full of FSU and Gator fans, is really cool and it shows that this is one of the best rivalries in the country.”- Beisel.

Division I Men
Florida State University’s Pavel Sankovich (Hrodna, Hrodna, Belarus) had an impressive performance against University of Florida, earning him the Philip Hunsaker CollegeSwimming.com Men’s Division I Swimmer of the Week. The 16th-ranked FSU men’s team was led by the senior Sankovich, who raced to two dominating wins in the 100 back and 100 fly events. Sankovich first swam a 47.33 in the 100 back before posting a season best time in the 100 fly with a mark of 46.49. His 100 fly race was the sixth fastest time in the NCAA this season. Said Coach Bradley on Pavel’s Performance; “I really like how those two (Pavel and teammate Connor Knight) are dominating the 100 fly right now”.

Division II Women
Shakya was UCSD’s top female swimmer while the sixth-ranked Tritons went an even 3-3 in six dual meets this past week, all against NCAA Division I opponents. Shakya was second-fastest (1:51.43) only to SDSU freshman Anika Apostalon (1:49.35) in the 200 free on Monday, Dec. 30. She also achieved the second-best time in the 500 free, swimming 5:01.70, and fifth-best in the 200 back (2:10.25). On Saturday at home against Boise State and Grand Canyon, the senior captain was second in the 200 free (1:51.54), edging SDSU standout Mikaela Macklin (1:51.94), fifth in the 200 back (2:07.66) and fourth in the 500 free (5:04.52). Finally Sunday on Senior Day in La Jolla, Shakya won the 200 free (1:51.40) and was third in the 100 free (52.61). For the week, Shakya grabbed six individual dual-meet wins and was a member of three top-two relay placements with three wins.

Division II Men
Korth was his usual dominant self during a busy three-meet dual stretch for No. 8 UCSD, with the Tritons dropping three meets to NCAA Division I counterparts. The senior captain was the lone multiple-event winner for the men in sweeping his specialty breaststroke races against Air Force at San Diego State on Monday, Dec. 30. He first went 56.02 in the 100 before turning in a time of 2:03.39 to run away with the 200 by over three and a half seconds. At home Saturday against Grand Canyon, Korth touched third in the 50 free (21.10) before taking the 200 breast in 2:03.60 and placing third in the 200 IM (1:56.74). Finally Sunday on Senior Day in La Jolla, Korth again swept the breaststroke races, timing 55.90 in the 100 to miss the pool record by .79 seconds, and 2:03.38 in the 200. For the week, Korth collected five individual wins and was a part of five top-three relays with one win.

Division III Women
Middlebury Junior Jamie Hillas (Woodbridge, Conn.) is the Philip Hunsaker CollegeSwimming.com Women’s Division III Swimmer of the Week. Hillas posted five individual victories over the weekend in duals against Colby and Bates. Against Colby she won the 50 free (25.20), 100 free (55.50) and 50 fly (26.77). Her more impressive performance came against Bates where she won the 100 breast (1:05.73) and 100 fly (58.76) while posting an impressive relay split in the breaststroke of the 200 medley (30.06) and the 200 free relays (24.71).

Division III Men
Middlebury Senior Ian Mackay (Vero Beach, Fla.) is the Philip Hunsaker CollegeSwimming.com Men’s Division III Swimer of the Week after posting 5 individual victories for the Men in dual meet action against Colby and Bates. Against Colby Mackay won the 50 free (21.90), 100 back (54.78), and 200 IM (2:03.29). Against Bates Mackay won the 100 fly (51.69), 200 free (1:46.46), and posted a 21.76 leading off the 200 free relay and a split of 22.13 in the fly leg of the 200 medley relay.
