Brown Sweeps All 22 Events In Dual Against Providence

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, January 4. PROVIDENCE and Brown braved the cold on Saturday, and the Brown Bears came out on top with a 125-64 win in the men’s meet and 131-69 victory on the women’s side. Brown won all 22 of the events contested this afternoon to sweep the meet. Caroline Vexler (100 free, 200 IM), Cory Mayfield (500 free, 200 IM), Megan Viohl (500 free, 1000 free) and Paige Gilley (50 free, 100 back) all picked up two individual wins for Brown.

The Providence College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were swept by the Brown Bears on Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center at Brown University. The men’s team fell 125-64 while the women’s team was defeated 131-69.

Junior John Fatigati (Mahwah, N.J.) collected second place finishes in the 200y IM (1:57.73) and the 100y backstroke (55.41). Senior Connor Lui (Monroe, Conn.) earned third in both the 50y freestyle (22.37) and the 100y freestyle (49.96). Junior Justin Tse (Framingham, Mass.) took second in the 200y freestyle at a time of 1:46.18, while freshman Zachary Begnaud (Natchitoches, La.) placed second in the 500y freestyle (5:02.24). Graduate student Kyle McLaughlin (Warrington, Pa.) and freshman Kurt Grunder (Binghamton N.Y.) took second and third place in the 100y butterfly at the times of 54.64 and 56.68, while freshman William Fierro Joyce (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and senior Andrew St. Pierre (Fairhaven, Mass.) earned second and third in the 100y breaststroke at times of 1:03.24 and 1:03.37. The men’s team also took second and third place in the 200y freestyle relay. Lui, freshman Michael Martinico (Nesconset, N.Y.), McLaughlin, and Tse finished with a time of 1:28.25, while freshman Jonathan Mariner (Marion, Mass.), Fatigati, Begnaud, and freshman Cassidy Bastianelli (Newton, Conn.) finished in 1:31.70.

On the women’s side, freshman Helen Smith (Belmont, Mass.) took third place in the 200y IM (2:19.69) and second in the 500y freestyle (5:31.07). Freshman Kelly Quinn (Garden City, N.Y.) earned second in the 100y butterfly (1:03.94), senior Jill Mullany (Monroe, Conn.) took second in the 100y freestyle (54.03), and junior Kelly O’Neill (Rye, N.Y.) earned second in the 100y backstroke (1:04.32). Freshman Colleen Hartigan (Suffern, N.Y.) placed third in the 500y freestyle (5:33.24). Junior Leia Federiconi (Williamsville, N.Y.) and freshman Katie Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass.) took second and third place in the 100y breaststroke with the times of 1:07.97 and 1:13.32, respectively. The 200y freestyle relay team made up of sophomore Reilly O’Connell (West Barnstable, Mass.), O’Neill, freshman Mary McKenna (Wethersfield, Conn.), and Mullany earned second place (1:42.49), while the relay team of senior Kimberly Hall (Morristown, N.J.), Smith, freshman Angela Caputo (Longmeadow, Mass.), and senior Meghan Condon (Stratford, Conn.) placed third finishing at 1:47.41.

The men’s and women’s teams will be traveling to Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico for their winter training from Jan. 7-14. The team’s next meet will take place on Jan. 18 when the Friars travel to Villanova, Pa. to take on the Wildcats at noon.
