Joao De Lucca, Andrew Kosic Battle in 50 Free in Louisville/Georgia Tech Dual Meet

ATLANTA, Georgia, January 4. ON the way back from holiday training in Florida, the Louisville men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams stopped by Atlanta today for a dual meet against future Atlantic Coast Conference rival Georgia Tech.

The Cardinals were no match for Georgia Tech, with the women beating the Yellow Jackets 202-60. The men of Louisville were equally dominant, scoring 191.5 points to Georgia Tech’s 70.

Joao de Lucca, the reigning NCAA champion in the 200 freestyle, skipped that event today in favor of the sprint events, and had his hands full with Georgia Tech’s Andrew Kosic. De Lucca and Kosic tied for first in the 50 free with matching times of 20.41, while Louisville’s Carlyle Blondell was third with a 20.91. All three have been under 20 seconds this season, with Kosic posting a 19.92 at the Georgia Tech Invite. De Lucca’s 19.45 from nationals has him sixth in the official collegiate ranks, while Blondell’s 19.58 from the same meet is 11th.

Just one event later, De Lucca won the 100 free outright with a 44.48 to Kosic’s 44.80. For Kosic, it’s not far off his fastest unshaved time of the season, a 44.68 from the meet against Georgia. De Lucca, however, had posted a 43.91 in a meet against Tennessee to stand as his best in-season time, and well off the 42.24 he swam at nationals. Blondell found himself in third place again with a 45.29 today.

De Lucca and Kosic returned to face each other in leadoff legs in the 200 free relay to end the meet, and both swam faster than their individual swims earlier in the meet. Kosic got the touch with a 20.12, while De Lucca finished with a 20.30. (Louisville won the relay, 1:22.57 to 1:22.80.)

Kelsi Worrell, the reigning USA national champion in the 200-yard butterfly, sat out that event today but put up an impressive 54.43 to win the 100 fly. She also won the 50 free with a 23.15 to beat out teammate Krissie Brandenburg’s 23.75.

In Worrell’s place, Tanja Kyllianen won the women’s 200 fly with a 2:01.54, then returned later to take the 500 free with a 4:55.52 and the 200 IM with a 2:02.85.

Georgia Tech was only able to win one event today. Ben Southern took the men’s 200 fly with a 1:50.18, overtaking Louisville’s Juan Lopez in the final 50 yards. Lopez touched with a 1:50.66.
