Becky Stoughton, Imelda Wistey Set Two Pool Records Each At Cy-Hawk Dual

AMES, Iowa, December 15. THE University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team picked up its fourth-straight dual meet win over in-state rival Iowa State on Friday night in the Cy-Hawk dual meet at Beyer Hall Pool in Ames. A handful of pool records fell in the tightly contested meet, which ended in a 165-135 win for Iowa.

Iowa junior Becky Stoughton set two new pool records in the 500 and 1000 free, while senior Lindsay Seeman established a new pool record in the 200 back to lead the Hawkeyes. Iowa State kicked off the meet with a new pool record in the 200 medley relay, before Karyl Clarete (200 free), Imelda Wistey (100 and 200 breast) and Sarah Deis (200 IM) set pool records of their own. Wistey’s times in both breaststroke events established new Iowa State school records.

The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team won its fourth-straight dual over Iowa State, knocking off the Cyclones, 165-135, in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup on Friday night at Beyer Hall Pool.

The Hawkeyes, who have now won 8-of-10 against the Cyclones, including the last four duals, won 10-of-16 events on the evening. Three Hawkeyes led the way, winning multiple events.

Iowa opened the meet with a second and third place showing in the 200 medley relay. The team of Audrey Kumm, Karolina Wartalowicz, Abbey Tuchscherer, and Elise Borja took second (1:43.86), while Maddie Bro, Emma Sougstad, Haley Gordon, and Maggie Hofstadter touched out in 1:44.45 to finish third.

Junior Becky Stoughton dominated the distance events, finishing first in both the 500 and 1,000-free. Stoughton broke the pool record in the 500-free when she finished in 4:50.92, while touching out 10:07.95 to claim the 1,000-free. The 1,000 time marks a new season-best for Stoughton in the event.

Senior Lindsay Seemann posted a pair of victories in the backstroke events, winning the 100 and 200-back. She won the 100-back in 54.75, while her 200-back time of 1:57.82 is a new pool record. Both times are season-bests and NCAA `B’ cut times.

Tuchscherer notched two victories of her own, winning the 100-fly in 55.43, while touching out in 2:02.20 to claim the 200-fly.

Sophomore Olivia Kabacinski posted Iowa’s final individual victory in the pool, winning the 100-free in 50.45.
Iowa concluded the meet with a win in the 400 free relay. The quartet of Kabacinski, Emily Hovren, Jennifer Weigand, and Seemann touched out in 3:24.14 to win the relay. The time marks a season-best for the Hawkeyes in the event.

The Hawkeyes swept both events in the diving well. Redshirt junior Abby Grilli claimed the 3-meter springboard title with a score of 336.97, while fellow redshirt junior Joelle Christy finished second in 321.52. In the 1-meter springboard, Christy took first with a score of 303.60, with Grilli finishing in second (296.40).

The Hawkeyes return to action Jan. 18 when they host Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana in a quad meet. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.

The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-2-1, 0-1 Big 12) fell to instate rival Iowa (5-2, 2-2 Big 10) tonight, 165-135. In typical Cy-Hawk fashion, the meet was a back-and-forth, heavy weight battle with the lead changing hands six times throughout the contest.

Iowa State’s senior diver Jessica Henderson claimed a third place finish in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 293.02 to push the meet to a 75-75 tie after eight events. Later in the meet, Iowa’s Becky Stoughton (4:50.92) out touched Iowa State’s standout freshman Karyl Clarete (4:52.17) to give the Hawkeyes a 116-110 lead.

Regardless of the result, Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson is pleased with his team’s performance in the rivalry matchup.

“I was very pleased with their effort,” Sorenson said. “I thought we went out and raced in every event, and we put on a tremendous show for the fans. I know our women were doing their best and swimming their fastest, they were just a little bit faster.”

Tonight’s big stage produced big time performances from both teams. A total of seven records were broken in tonight’s meet, five of them belonging to the Cyclones.

Iowa State senior Imelda Wistey claimed three of those records for herself. With a time of 1:00.46 Wistey broke the pool record of 1:02.87 set six years ago and her own school record of 1:01.35 set on Mar. 1, 2013.

Wistey then went on to break the school record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.79, breaking the previous record of 1:15.31 set by teammate Emily Wiltsie on Dec. 9, 2013. According to Wistey, she experienced a “rollercoaster of emotions” throughout the meet.

“This is my last Cy-Hawk rivalry meet. It’s bittersweet,” Wistey said. “I’m happy with what I’ve done, that I could make an impact, but at the same time I know I’ll never swim against the Hawkeyes again.”

Another pool record was set by freshman teammate Clarete who raced to a first place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.38, breaking the previous record of 1:49.73. Clarete’s high level of performance early in her career has caught the attention of her coach.

“The sky is the limit for her, and she is training well,” Sorenson said. “I know she’s not happy with the result and the outcome of her swim, so she is just going to get that much better. She is just a fierce competitor.”
