Eastern Michigan, Oakland Battle For Lead At Eastern Michigan Invitational

YPSILANTI, Michigan, December 7. THE Eastern Michigan women and Oakland men grabbed the lead last night during the first finals session at the Eastern Michigan Invitational in Ypsilanti. Today figures to be a tight day of racing as far as the team standings are concerned, as the EMU women lead Oakland by only three points, while the Oakland men lead EMU by 12 points.

After a day of competition, the Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team is leading the way in the EMU Invitational with 344 points. Oakland University is closely behind with 341 points, followed by Wayne State University with 303 points.

The afternoon began with a victory for the Green and White, as redshirt-junior Melynee Saya (Nashua, N.H.-Nashua) claimed a first-place finish on the 3-meter springboard with her score of 280.90.

Three second-place finishes would come before the Eagles claimed another winning time. Freshman Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-Central) was runner-up in the 1650 free with a time of 17:21.17, sophomore Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) swam a season-best 52.25 in the 100 free, and Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) was the second to touch in for the 200 breast.

Junior Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) had a season-best finish in the 200 fly, as her time of 2:02.03 gave her a first-place finish in the event. The day concluded with one final win for the Eagles as the 400 free relay team of Detro, Godlewski, junior Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet) and sophomore Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) finished with a 3:25.67 mark.

The squad will continue with the EMU Invitational Saturday, Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.

Eastern Michigan University’s men’s swimming and diving team completed the first day of the EMU Invitational. At the end of the day’s events, EMU stands in second-place with 331 points, trailing Oakland University’s 343 points. Wayne State University is in third with 184 points, while Ball State University is in fourth with 138 points.

The meet opened up with a first and second-place finish in the 1-meter dive, as freshman Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic S.S.) and junior Sage Stephens (Warren, Ill.-Warren) took the event with scores of 331.28 and 287.70, respectively.

The Eagles consistently placed swimmers in the top-three of their respective events, as junior Mike Fisher (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and sophomore Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) finished second and third in the 200 breast while juniors Franco Petrone (Etobicoke, Ontario-Silverthorne Collegiate Institute) and Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) nabbed third in the 1650 and 100 free.

Two more first-place performances were turned out by the Green and White, as sophomore Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz S.S.) swam a 1:48.86 in the 200 fly and the 400 free relay team of sophomore Andrew Henry (Gardner, N.C.-West Johnson), seniors Dexter Foos (Fremont, Ohio-Fremont-Ross) and Gus Everson (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky), and Moore finished in 2:58.99, which broke the pool record, previously set at 2:59.70. The record stood for 21 years before the quartet managed to top it.

The EMU Invitational will continue Saturday, Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.
