Miami (Ohio) Women, Denison Men Top Team Standings At Miami Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio, December 5. FOLLOWING a short first session which included only the 800 freestyle relay and 1650 freestyle, the Miami (Ohio) women and Denison men sit atop the team standings at the Miami Invitational in Oxford. Denison put its stamp on the evening with wins by their men’s relay team and Al Weik in the mile. Meanwhile, Miami’s Stephanie Pearce helped put the RedHawk women on top of the team standings with her win in the women’s mile.

A dominating team effort in the 1650 freestyle has the Miami women’s swimming and diving team in first place following Thursday night’s session of the Miami Invitational at Nixon Aquatic Center.

Miami is currently leading with a team score of 278. Illinois is second with 195 points, Denison is third, Cincinnati is fourth and Wright State, Emory and Ball State round out the team rankings.

Junior Stephanie Pearce turned in a time of 16:35.64 and placed first in the 1650 freestyle, earning the RedHawks 36 points. Pearce was only five seconds slower than the Miami record of 16:30.70.

Junior Courtney Collett finished the 1650 freestyle in third with a time of 16:50.63. Sophomore Aubrey Kluth (17:00.17), freshman Julia Campbell (17:02.77), sophomore Kelly Rogers (17:04.08) and sophomore Shannon Ahearn (17:04.50) were seventh through tenth earning Miami 93 points combined. Junior Emma Craig also finished twentieth (17:46.59) earning the RedHawks another eight points.

The relay team of Julia Campbell, freshman Elise Campbell, sophomore Sara Krueger and senior Brianna Fujan placed third in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:26.38. Junior Whitney Mitchell, sophomore Natalie Rohr, sophomore Betsy Zilch and Pearce earned 54 points by finishing fifth (7:29.75).

The Miami Invitational resumes Friday morning, Dec. 6, at 9 a.m. with the 200 butterfly preliminaries. The evening session kicks off later that day at 6 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center.

Miami’s men’s swimming and diving team sits in second-place at the Miami Invitational following Thursday night’s session at the Nixon Aquatic Center. Denison leads with 283 points, edging out the RedHawks to this point, who earned 164 points to begin the Invitational.

Freshman Bryan McNamara swam well and was the top Miami swimmer in the 1650 freestyle (16:11.26) placing ninth overall. The ninth-place finish earned the RedHawks 23 points. McNamara also contributed to a fifth-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay with senior Dan Nemeth, freshman Lucas Brock and sophomore Jake Prodoehl (6:54.28).

The relay team of freshman Grant Stafford, junior Joe Baumgartner, junior Andrew Kilkenny and sophomore Chris Dieter finished third in the 800 freestyle relay (6:43.18) earning the RedHawks 58 points.

Senior Sean Minderlein and Brock finished thirteenth and fourteenth in the 1650 freestyle, respectively. Minderlein finished with a time of 16:31.53 and Brock finished with a time of 16:46.30.

The Miami Invitational resumes Friday morning, Dec. 6, at 9 a.m. with the 200 butterfly preliminaries. The evening session kicks off later that day at 6 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
