Virginia Tech School Records Continue To Fall At H2Okie Invitational

CHRISTIANSBURG, Virginia, November 23. AFTER two days of competition at the H2Okie Fall Invitational, both the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lead the team standings heading into today’s final session. The H2Okies have certainly made a statement at their home invitational, setting a handful of school records during the meet.

The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams continued their strong showing at the H2Okie Fall Invitational on Friday, as the H2Okies broke three more school records on the second day of competition at Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Weronika Paluszek highlighted the performances for the women on the evening, clocking a 1:00.32 in the 100 Breast to take first place and set a new Virginia Tech school record. The sophomore also swam the second leg of the 200 Medley Relay, which took first place in 1:40.23.

The H2Okies also got a clean sweep in the 200 Freestyle, as freshman Jessica Hespeler (1:48.50), sophomore Emily Ryczek (1:50.47) and junior Margaret Parcell (1:51.02) finished first through third, respectively.
In all, the women earned five wins and 12 top-three finishes across eight events.

The women are in first place after two days, dominating the scores with 952.50 points. South Carolina sits in second with 493.50, while William & Mary is in third with 369.50.

Freshman Jan Switkowski broke a school record of his own in the 200 Freestyle, clocking a time of 1:35.06 en route to a first place finish.

The 800 Freestyle also made history, breaking the school mark in the final event of the day. The team of junior Morgan Latimer, junior Owen Burns, sophomore Lucas Bureau and Switkowski broke the old record by almost three seconds en route to an NCAA-qualifying time of 6:23.96.

On the day, the men produced five wins and 11 top-three finishes in their eight events.
The men lead the way after two days with 895 points, ahead of South Carolina, who has 687, as well as William & Mary and UConn, who are tied at 401.

“This was another fine day for us,” Head Coach Ned Skinner said. “I’m very proud of these student-athletes and their commitment to the cause. To have the school records we broke tonight is very sweet. Jan Switkowski and Morgan Latimer had huge nights for us, and the women have really done a great job as well.”

The H2Okies will be back in the pool on Saturday, November 23, as they wrap up the three-day competition at the CAC. Preliminary action begins at 10 a.m., while the finals will kick off at 6 p.m.
