Harvard Men Rout Dartmouth, Cornell In First Competition Of The Season

HANOVER, New Hampshire, November 15. IN the team’s first meet of the season, the Harvard men’s swimming and diving team crushed Dartmouth and Cornell Friday night in Hanover. Senior captain Chris Satterthwaite erased a 32-year-old pool record in the 200 free in an outstanding meet for the Crimson.

The Harvard men’s swimming and diving team got off to a quick start to open the 2013-14 season with two dominating wins over Dartmouth, 211.5-88.5, and Cornell, 229-71, in Karl Michael Pool on Friday.

The Crimson secured 13 total wins in the 16-event tri-meet to give Harvard its sixth consecutive win over Cornell and 42nd consecutive victory over Dartmouth. Of its 13 event triumphs, seven different Crimson picked up individual wins, led by senior captain Chris Satterthwaite, diver Mike Mosca and freshmen Jack Manchester and Eric Ronda.

Satterthwaite was stellar on the afternoon, claiming wins at 100 and 200 free, setting a 32-year-old pool record in the latter, taking part in the pool-record setting 400 freestyle Harvard relay unit. For his part, Mosca took first in both the 1- and 3-meter dives, outscoring the competition by more than 43 points combined throughout the day. Newcomer Ronda picked up wins at the 100 (57.31) and 200 breaststroke (2:02.62) for his first collegiate sweep.

The Crimson quartet of Manchester, Ronda, Oliver Lee and Griffin Schumacher faired well in the 200 medley relay wiping the field clean with their 1:32.38 time. First-year swimmer Cliff Goertemiller kept things moving right along with his first collegiate win in the lengthy 1000 free. His time of 9:24.22 was six seconds faster than Mike Gaudiani in second and 21 seconds faster than the nearest swimmer not in a Harvard cap.

After Jacob Luna grabbed top spot in the 200 butterfly (1:50.26), Lee took home a win in his only individual event of the day, the 50 free, pacing the field with his speedy 50.32 split. Another freshman in Aly Abdel Khalik took home first place as he swam the 500 free in an impressive 4:35.65 for his first ever win.

With the two wins, the Crimson is on the right path for its second straight Ivy League Dual championship. Harvard returns to the pool next weekend with a trip to Columbia to take on the Lions at 6 p.m.

The Dartmouth men’s swimming and diving squad split its first duals meet of the season, defeating Cornell, 170-130, but fell to Harvard, 211.5-85.5 on Friday evening at Karl Michael Pool.

Sophomore James Verhagen finished first in the 100-Backstroke, two second behind his Dartmouth record of 47.55. Verhagen then placed third in the 200-Backstoke at 1:50.56. Freshman Timo Vaimann took third in the 100-Breast, finishing at 58.13. Classmate David Harmon placed first in the 100-Fly at 50.06 and then finished third in the 200-Fly.

Freshman Taylor Clough finished third in the 3-Meter diving competition with a score of 312.15. The Big Green also had three other top-10 finishers in the event. Senior Benjamin Weill, sophomore Brett Gillis and junior Ryan Shelley finished 5-7, respectively. Gillis placed third in the 1-Meter diving event with a score of 297.55.

Sophomore Aaron Athanas won the 200-IM, finishing the event in 1:55.44.

Sophomore Daniel Whitcomb and senior Andrew North placed third and fourth, respectively in the 50-Free. Junior Ian Woon placed fourth in the 100-Free at 46.89.

The hosts placed fourth and fifth in the 200-Medley Relay, as the team of Verhagen, Vaimann, North and Woon finished in 1:33.55. The fifth place quad finished in 1:34.16.

Sophomore Jun Oh placed fifth in the 1,000-Free, hitting the touch pad at 9:45.46. Jack Long placed sixth in the race, at 9:50.50. Oh then placed third in the 200-Free at 1:41.04 and third in the 500-Free.

Junior Jay Schulte placed third in the 200-Backstroke and Vaimann placed fifth.

Dartmouth will return to the pool December 6-8, when they race in duals against Brown and host Princeton.

The Cornell men’s swimming and diving team had some outstanding efforts in the team’s first Ivy League meet of the season. The Big Red dropped a 170-130 decision to Dartmouth and a 229-71 matchup with Harvard on Friday afternoon at Karl Michael and Spaulding Pool to fall to 1-2 on the year.

Victor Luo had great swims in both the 100 (57.96) and 200 (2:04.53) breast, finishing second overall in both events to Harvard’s Eric Ronda. Dylan Sali placed second in the 200 back (1:50.36), behind only a pool record time of 1:47.27 by Harvard’s Jack Manchester.

Eric May placed second in the 200 IM to Dartmouth’s Aaron Athanas with a solid 1:55.14 swim. Cornell’s 400 free relay squad of Harry Harpham, Kevin Kreher, Taylor Adams and Tim Satterthwaite went 3:08.95 to top Dartmouth and finish fourth overall. The 200 medley relay team of Sali, Luo, Michael Reynolds and Adams also topped the Big Green and finished third overall, touching in 1:33.36.
