Nevada Continues Winning Streak Over California Schools

RENO, Nevada, November 2. THE University of Nevada continued its winning ways this afternoon, beating a California school for the second week in a row. The Wolf Pack easily handled Fresno State, topping the bulldogs by a final score of 174-119.

For the second week in a row the University of Nevada swimming & diving team was dominant in the Lombardi Pool defeating Fresno State 174-119 on Saturday. Last week the Wolf Pack won 10-of-13 events in a 135-70 victory over Pacific and today won first six events and 15-of-16 in the meet.

Nevada’s A, 200-yard medley relay team of Luiza Vieira, Yawen Li, Sita Kusserow and Teresa Baerens got the Pack off to a fast start swimming 1:46.36 to record the first victory of the meet. The Pack led 13-4 after one event and never trailed in the lopsided victory.

Li was back in the pool in the next event winning the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:30.62 and later won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:16.66. Kusserow joined Li as a double individual winner for the second week in a row placing first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.15 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.27.

Vieira was the third Pack swimmer to win two individual events on the day, taking first in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events with times of 59.35 and 2:07.56 respectively. Arantxa Medina was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke posting a time of 1:06.66.

Rachel O’Connor swam 2:08.86 to win the 200-yard butterfly. Baerens won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.92 and was the Pack’s top finisher in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.33 to place second.

Riley Hilbrandt was Nevada’s seventh swimmer to win event placing first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:11.25.

The Pack divers won both events in the meet. Grace Huang’s score of 321.97 earned first place in the 1-meter and Stephanie Hansen won the 3-meter with a score of 336.60.

Nevada concluded the outstanding day with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:31.50. Li, Kusserow, Medina and Andrea Kostecki comprised the winning team.

The Pack’s final home meet of the season is next Saturday when UC Davis is at Lombardi Pool for a 2 p.m. competition.

Fresno State Athletics

Competing in their first dual meet of the young season, the Fresno State swimming and diving fell to a tough Nevada team 174-119 on Saturday afternoon in the altitude of Reno.

The Wolf Pack won 15 of the 16 events in the dual meet to cruise to the victory. The lone Bulldog to win an event was Leah Hatayama in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 24.25 seconds. Hatayama also finished the 100 Freestyle in 53.40 seconds to finish second.

Hannah Prigge, Fresno State’s only returning NCAA-qualifier, posted a career-best in the 1-meter dive. The senior scored 315.60 to top her previous best of 292.80 which she totaled in a dual meet with UC Davis last season. Her score ranks second in the Mountain West this season. Prigge also finished second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 307.20.

Other Fresno State swimmers that had strong days were Kelly Simmons and Lucy Titchin. Simmons, a sophomore from San Jose, finished second in both the 500 (5:11.74) and 1000 (10:44.88) Freestyle races. She was also part of a 400 Freestyle relay team that finished third. Titchin finished second in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:55.88. She also swam to third place finishes in the 100 (53.68) and 500 (5:16.65) Freestyle races.

The Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday, November 9, when they host Pacific, UC Santa Cruz and Fresno Pacific in a dual meet at the Aquatics Center at noon.
