Missouri State Swimmers Set Three Pool Records Against Southern Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri, November 2. MISSOURI State swimmers Uvis Kalnins and Paul Le set individual pool records Saturday, leading the men’s team to a 148-95 win over Southern Illinois. The SIU women defeated Missouri State by only six points, winning 123.5-117.5.

The Missouri State men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams split a dual meet with Southern Illinois Saturday at Hammons Student Center Pool.

The men’s team defeated the Salukis, 148-95, and the women fell, 123.5-117.5. The win for the men improved them to 14-11 all-time against SIU while the loss for the women dropped them to 7-11 versus the Salukis.

Three pool records for the MSU men were set on Saturday. Sophomore Uvis Kalnins broke the pool mark in the 200-yard IM in 1:49.63 and junior Paul Le followed suit in the 200 backstroke in 1:45.61. Then, with the meet already decided, the 400 freestyle relay team of Le, junior Isaac McKnight, senior Vitalii Baryshokand Kalnins finished strong with the final pool record of the day in 3:02.58.

The men’s team won 10 events on the day with other victories coming from Miguel Davila in the 1,000 free (9:24.10), Le in the 50 free (20.52), Matthew Wilson in the 200 butterfly (1:50.50), Isaac Springer in the 200 breast (2:05.43) and Kalnins in the 100 free (45.76).

The 400 medley relay team of Yuri Garanito, Springer, Wilson and Baryshok claimed that event in 3:21.99.

Junior diver Garrett Nevels won the 1-meter event with 327.90 points.

The women had some strong swims despite having a difficult day overall. Senior Renata Sander won both the 200 IM (2:10.49) and 200 breast (2:21.73). Sophomore Kate Gately took the 100 free in 53.15. Sophomore Dora Kiss touched first in the 200 fly in 2:05.78 for the Bears’ only other individual event win of the day.

Gately, Janke Engelbrecht, Megan Holthoff and Shannon Myer teamed to earn a victory in the 400 free relay to close the meet for the women.

Missouri State hosts Missouri Friday at 5 p.m., and the women welcome Arkansas to Hammond Student Center Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team split a dual meet at Missouri State Saturday. The women’s team won their dual, 123.5-117.5, and the men dropped theirs, 148-95.

Pamela Benitez, Till Pallmann, and Cheri Zhang highlighted the meet for the Salukis. Benitez, the Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week last week, won all three events she competed in. Pallmann, a sophomore, won both of his individual events, while Zhang swept the springboards for the second time this season.

On the women’s side, Benitez won the 1000- free (10:16.29), 500- free (5:02.62), and the 200- free (1:51.85). Freshman Sarah James picked up a win in the 200- backstroke with a time of 2:06.42 and Luisa Silveira won the 50- free in 24.11. Hannah Pinion picked up a second place finish in the 200- medley (2:10.82) and Helena Amorim placed second in the 1000- free with a time of 10:30.60. Isabela Castro finished second in the 200- fly (2:07.00) and Holly Johnson finished third in the 50-free (24.81), respectively.

Morgan Timms, Riley Schroedter, Lauren Stockton and Rachael Barry teamed up to take the 400- medley relay by five second over a MSU team with a time of 3:35.38, while Johnson, Silveira, Amorim and Ella Otto finished in second place in the 400- free relay (3:34.96).

Zhang swept the 1-meter dive with a score of 329.40 and the 3-meter dive by four points over teammate Esther Chen with a score of 341.25.

On the men’s side, Pallmann picked up the only two wins for the Saluki men. Pallmann won the 500- free (4:34.22) and the 200- free (1:39.81). Kegan Skelton won the 3-meter dive (367.42) and took second place in the 1-meter with a score of 322.80.

Junior Calvin Kolar picked up two second place finishes. He finished the 200- IM with a time of 1:56.18 and the 200- breaststroke (2:05.93). Andres Saavedra finished second in the 50- free (21.52) followed by Shaun Wolfe (21.69), respectively.

Oleg Rabota, Matt Frey, Eric Sparks and Kolar finished second in the 400- medley relay with a time of 3:27.97 while Pallmann, Wolfe, Saavedra and Esteavo Andrade teamed up for a second place finish in the 400- freestyle relay (3:05.54).

SIU will be back in action on Nov. 8-9 when they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. for the Henderson Invitational.
