Margo Geer, Kevin Cordes Post Impressive Times as Arizona Takes on UNLV

TUCSON, Arizona, October 25. THE University of Arizona men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had a solid outing in the pool Friday night, winning more than half of the events contested to easily outpace UNLV on both the women’s (183-109) and men’s side (208-91).

Margo Geer posted three wins in the 200 free (1:47.29), 50 free (22.74) and 100 free (49.92). Geer’s 200 free now ranks second nationally behind Missy Franklin of Cal and Melanie Margalis of Georgia, while her 50 free sits second behind Wisconsin’s Ivy Martin.

Kevin Cordes swept both men’s breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 54.09 and the 200 in 2:00.21. Cordes’ time in the 100 is the fastest in Division I this season, while his 200 ranks tenth.

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona men’s and women’s swim and dive team kicked off the home season in style with 23 first place finishes against UNLV at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The women topped the Rebels by a score of 183-109, while the men came out on top with a score of 208-91.

On the women’s side, the Wildcats started the day by winning the 200 medley relay. The team of Alana Pazevic, Emma Schoettmer, Katja Hadjinak, and Grace Finnegan finished with a time of 1:41.50. Ashley Evens then went on to win the 1000 yard freestyle event with a time of 10:21.32.

Margo Geer had another good day in the pool with victories in the 200 free, 100 free, and the 50 free. The Cats swept all three of these events.

Alana Pazevic and Taylor Schick went 1-2 in the 100 back with Pazevic touching with a time of 56.53 and Schick touching at 56.76, while Emma Schoettmer took home the victory in the 100 breast and the 200 breast. Sara Borendame and Eve Sarris finished 2 and 3 to complete the sweep in both events.

The women continued to have a strong day with Ashley Evans, Elizabeth Pepper, and Katja Hadjinak finishing 1-2-3 in the 200 fly.

Bonnie Brandon also kept her momentum in the pool with another victory in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.09.

The Arizona men also had a good day in the pool starting off with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The team of Mitchell Friedman, Kevin Cordes, Giles Smith, and Carson Brindle swam to a finish of 1:28.85.

Sophomore Kelly Moodie took home an early victory for the Cats in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.84.

Friedemann added to his relay win with a victory in the 100 back. Smith also added 18 points for the Cats with victories in the 100 free and 100 fly.

Kevin Cordes tallied victories in the 100 breast and the 200 breast. Cordes won the 200 by almost 4 seconds. Meanwhile, Matt Barber notched his first victory of the season as he took home the 500 free in 4:34.80.

On the diving side, Rafael Quintero got two big wins on the afternoon as he claimed both the 1m and 3m events.

The men capped off the day with a victory in the 200 free relay. The team of Smith, Friedemann, Brian Stevens, and Jeff Amlee finished with a time of 1:21.90.

The Arizona women will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 8 when they host UCLA at 2 p.m. at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The men and women will then host USC on Saturday, Nov. 9th beginning at 2 p.m.

The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dropped their season opener on Friday afternoon at Arizona, with the Rebel men falling by a 208-91 score to the 23rd ranked Wildcats, and the UNLV women suffering a 183-109 loss.

On the men’s side, UNLV did post a total of four first-place swims on the afternoon. Matt Roe won the first individual race of the day, touching first in the 1000 free in 9:24.44. Balint Batka claimed the 200 fly in 1:48.76, while Dillon Virva posted a winning time of 20.26 in the 50 free. The final win for the UNLV men was in the 200 IM, with Giacomo Gremizzi placing first in 1:50.18.

Two Rebel women each won one event against Arizona. Jessica Heim placed first in the 500 free, posting a time of 5:02.99. The other win came from Katelyne Herrington in the 100 fly, thanks to a first-place time of 54.95.

UNLV stays in the state of Arizona for its next competition, on Saturday at Arizona State in Tempe starting at 12 pm.
