LSU, Tulane Battle For Louisiana Bragging Rights

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, October 25. THE LSU women’s swimming and diving team rebounded from two tough losses last weekend to Georgia and Arkansas by easily downing Tulane, 211-89, on Friday night.

The LSU women’s swimming and diving team (1-2 overall, 0-2 SEC) collected their first win of the season 211-89 over Tulane Friday night at the LSU Natatorium.

The Lady Tigers produced a collective team performance with seven different swimmers earning wins.

“Today was a day where we were able to see our depth and take a look at the quality we have within our team,” LSU swimming coach Dave Geyer said. “From the beginning, we were able to use our whole lineup to secure a lot of wins. We raced really well tonight.”

Leah Troskot, Danielle Stirrat and Colleen O’Neil each earned two victories. Troskot touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (24.20) and 100 freestyle (52.58). O’Neil earned her first wins of the season in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.56) and 200 breaststroke (2:21.64). Stirrat secured wins in the 100 back (56.87) and 500 free (5:02.03).

Senior Torrey Bussey produced another solid performance winning the 100 butterfly (55.91) and placing second in the 100 backstroke (57.12).

Kara Kopcso collected her third victory of the season with a win in the 200 free (1:51.74). Kopcso also touched the wall second in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.84).

Megan Cox won the 200 backstroke (2:03.87) and Sophie Weber finished off the meet with a win in the 200 IM (2:05.18)

In relays, the team of Caley Oquist, Torrey Bussey, Kara Kopcso and Amber Carter won the 400-medley relay (3:49.17). To conclude the meet, Rainey White, Leah Troskot, Devon Dabney and Kara Kopcso earned first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.61).

On the diving side, Alex Bettridge swept both the one-meter and three-meter events. She scored a 311.70 on her three-meter dive and 304.73 on her three-meter dive.

Cassie Weil placed second in both the one-meter (260.63) and three-meter dive (279.75) and Izzy Choquehuanca was the third place point earner in the three-meter dive (252.90).

“I liked that we focused on the competition and we had some tidbits of absolute greatness.” LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “We didn’t put our best performances together but we were very solid.”

The men’s swimming and diving team returns to the Natatorium Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. when they host Auburn.
