UNC-Wilmington Sweeps Emory; Women’s Meet Comes Down To Relay

WILMINGTON, North Carolina, October 19. EMORY, an NCAA D3 national title contender that typically schedules a tough dual meet slate each year, went on the road to NCAA D1 team UNC-Wilmington today. The Seahawks weren’t the most kind hosts, putting together a 193-95 and 152-146 pair of wins over the Emory me and women, respectively.

UNCW’s Hannah Stephenson had an impressive outing for the Seahawks, winning a pair of individual titles and helping her team to a pair of relay wins as well. She touched first in the 100 back (58.16) and 200 back (2:05.12).

In relay duty, Stephenson leadoff with a 27.28 as Stephenson, Jenson Engen, Catherine Gargula and Rachel Sears won the 200 medley relay with a 1:46.33. She closed out the night by leading off in 25.33 as Stephenson, Courtney Dangremond, Katie Grose and Sears won the 200 free relay in 1:37.53.

Engen also captured the 100 breast (1:03.95) and 200 breast (2:19.02), while Sears topped the 50 free (24.29) before falling to Emory’s dynamic sprinter Nancy Larson in the 100 free (53.01). Gargula also won the 100 fly in 58.88.

The Emory women definitely put up a bigger fight, nearly taking down the Seahawks in the process. On top of Larson’s win in the 100, Mckenzie Newsum-Schoenberg won the 1000 free in 10:33.62 while Marissa Bergh clocked a 1:56.55 to win the 200 free as Emory had a strong freestyle performance against UNCW. Newsum-Schoenberg also doubled up with a 2:09.75 to win the 200 fly, before turning in a title trifecta with a 5:10.47 in the 500 free.

Emory nearly pulled off a big upset with an incredible 400 IM effort. Michelle York (4:39.40), Brooke Woodward (4:41.30) and Megan Beach (4:42.32) went 1-2-3 for the Eagles.

The UNCW men had a much easier time of it. Eric Conrad, Christian Cremer and Alex Labonge each doubled up individually for the Seahawks.

Conrad won the 200 back (1:55.09) and 100 back (52.41), while Cremer turned in wins in the 500 free (4:43.73) and 1000 free (9:50.21). Labonge, meanwhile, touched first in the 200 free (1:45.71) and 100 free (47.49). Joe Gallene hit the wall in 21.66 for the 50 free title.

Zach Sowers took home the 100 fly title in 51.24, while Ross Wyand claimed the 400 IM crown in 4:12.85.

Conrad, Michael Baric, Zach Sowers and Joe Gallene won the 200 medley relay for UNCW with a 1:34.12, while Gallene, Adam Salzman, Drew Gaertner and Labonge won the 200 free relay in 1:25.01.

Emory’s Andrew Wilson pocketed the 100 breast title for the Eagles with a 58.79, while teammate Hayden Baker won the 200 fly in 1:55.64. Wilson doubled up with a 2:08.76 in the 200 breast as well.
