Matt Josa Clocks School Record in Triple as Queens Rolls Through Gardner-Webb in Facility Opener

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, October 18. IN the first swim competition at the Levine Center for Wellness and Recreation, the Royals of Queens University of Charlotte played rude hosts to the visiting Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb.

The men and women both dominated the contest, with the Royals breaking a school record and pulling down nine NCAA B cut qualifying times.

Matt Josa made the biggest splash for Queens with a new school record. He clocked an NCAA B cut time of 1:46.85 in the 200-yard backstroke. That was the top swim among the 10 victorious efforts for Queens in the men’s meet. Josa also won the 200-yard free earlier in the night with another NCAA B cut with a 1:40.18.

Harry Traystman, Agni Jayprakash, Evante Gibson and Ben Taylor opened the night with a 1:34.13 to win the 200 medley relay as Queens never looked back. Alex Menke followed with a 9:37.58 for the win in the 1000-yard free. Menke doubled up with a 4:43.22 in the 500 free.

Queens dominated the men’s 50-yard free with a top three finish from Nic Eriksson (21.36), Austin Sumrall (21.87) and John Suther (22.13). Felipe Oliveira then clinched the 200 IM title with a 1:54.89, before Christian Yeatts crushed the 200-yard fly in 1:57.66. Eriksson doubled up with a 2:08.89 in the 200-yard breast.

Josa then earned his fourth win of the night with a 44.87 leadoff for Queens’ 400 yard free relay win from Josa, Eriksson, Taylor and Hayden Kosater (3:08.75).

The lone win for Gardner-Webb’s men came by way of Nathan Lile, who raced to a 46.82 for the men’s 100-yard freestyle triumph.

The Queens women nearly had the same level of dominance with nine wins.

Hannah Peiffer, Emma Durante, Alexandra Marshall, and Lauren Mock turned in an NCAA B cut time of 1:46.89 for the 200-yard medley relay to kick things off for Queens.

Meredith Boudreaux raced her way to an NCAA B cut time of 10:29.82 in the 1000 yard free, before Lillian Gordy clinched the 200 free title in an NCAA B cut time of 1:53.37. On the other end of the freestyle spectrum, Alexandra Marshall topped the 50 free in 24.04 for another NCAA B cut.

Caroline Arakelian had a strong meet as well. She posted an NCAA B cut of 2:04.42 to win the 200 IM with teammate Peiffer posting a B cut with a second-place 2:07.62. Peiffer then won the 200 fly with a B cut 2:05.52. Arakelian returned with a 2:01.47 to win the 200 back.

Gordy doubled off her 200 free with a B cut time of 52.65 to win the 100 free, with Boudreaux posting a double of her own with a 5:11.21 in the 500 free.

Gardner-Webb won a few titles to stop a full event sweep towards the end of the meet. Charity Byrum won the 200 breast in 2:21.15, crushing the field in the process. They then won the final relay with Jenna Ballinger, Faith Kempf, Giorgie Graves and Christina Clayton picking up a 3:37.32 in the 400 free relay.
