Stephanie Peacock Regains Top Spot in 1000 Free, Jack Conger Shines in Texas-North Carolina Dual

AUSTIN, Texas, October 17. A unexpected virtual battle took place today in the women’s 1000 freestyle, and Stephanie Peacock emerged victorious over Elizabeth Beisel as the North Carolina Tar Heels visited the Texas Longhorns in Austin.

The Texas women’s team beat North Carolina 171-129, while the Longhorn men’s team was victorious with a score of 171.5-126.5.

Peacock started off individual event racing with a 9:42.95 in the 1000, beating Beisel’s time of 9:43.79 from a few hours earlier at the Florida-Missouri dual meet. Peacock made a big improvement on what had been the fastest collegiate time of the season, a 9:48.32 from the Virginia Tech Invite. She’s the NCAA record holder in the event with a 9:28.92 from last December, done as a split during the 1650 freestyle.

Peacock doubled up today with a swift 4:46.04 in the 500 free, which was not good enough to beat Beisel’s 4:45.04 from the All-Florida Invite as the quickest time in the country so far this season.

Peacock’s teammate Sarah Koucheki also posted the nation’s fastest time in the 200 fly with a 1:58.57, beating out the 1:58.79 posted last weekend by Louisville’s Tanja Kylliainen. Kouchecki was the only swimmer under two minutes in the race, with Tar Heel Meredith Hoover second in 2:00.02. The Tar Heels swept the 200 fly with Cari Blalock taking third with a 2:00.80.

Like Peacock, Conger was also impressive in posting two wins in individual events. His times fell just short of being the fastest of the day, with two Florida Gators barely outswimming him. He won the 200 free with a 1:37.40, a bit slower than Sebastien Rousseau’s 1:37.38 from earlier today, and took the 100 fly in a swift 47.51, with Marcin Cieslak’s 47.50 in Missouri winning the day. Both swims put Conger in the top three in the collegiate rankings … in what are not considered his top events.

Texas’ Madisyn Cox won three events on the women’s side, taking the 100 breast with a 1:02.63, the 200 breast in 2:15.54 and the 400 IM with a 4:17.36.

The Surhoff sisters did not get the opportunity to race each other in their first meet on opposing teams. Kendall, a sophomore at UNC, swam the 200 fly, 200 back and 400 free relay. Jordan, a freshman at Texas, raced in the 200 medley relay and both breaststroke events.
