Air Force Upsets Kansas After Winning Final Relay

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, October 12. THE Air Force women’s swim team took down Kansas in nail-biting fashion this afternoon, winning the final relay and overcoming a one-point deficit heading into the last event to bring home the victory in their season-opener.

Air Force women’s swimming & diving opened the 2013-14 with a bold statement, defeating Kansas 154-146 in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Cadet Natatorium.

Trailing 141-142 headed into the final event of the day, the Falcons rallied to the win by taking first and third in the 400 free relay to pull out the win. The Falcons won 10 of 16 events on the day.

Junior Kim Davis led the way for Air Force with three wins. Davis won the 200 free with a time of 1:52.99 and the 200 breast by over three seconds with a time of 2:20.17. The Brentwood, Tenn., native also won the 200 medley by over two seconds with a time of 2:06.90.

The Falcons also got a pair of wins from senior Erin Bleyl and freshman Genevieve Miller. Bleyl won both the 50 and 100 free and Miller won the 500 and 1000 free. Both Bleyl and Miller also helped the Falcons to the win in the 400 free relay.

After taking second in the 200 medley relay to start the meet, the Falcons took first and second in the 1000 free. Miller took first place with a time of 10:31.09 and sophomore Sara Menke followed with a time of 10:38.58.

Air Force won the next two events, as Davis won the 200 free with a time of 1:52.99 and senior Samantha Laughlin won the 100 back with a time of 57.23. Three events later, Bleyl won the 50 free with a time of 24.52 before the first intermission.

After junior Lainie Long took second in the 1-meter diving (232.20 points), Bleyl came back and took first in the 100 free with a time of 52.95. Senior Hannah Cesare took second in both the 50 and 100 free with times of 24.57and 53.16.

The Falcons followed with three more wins, via Laughlin in the 200 back (2:04.69), Davis in the 200 breast (2:20.17) and Miller in the 500 free (5:04.50).

Kansas rallied to take the lead with wins in the next two events before Davis won the 200 medley to pull the Falcons to within one.

The group of Bleyl, Laughlin, Miller and Cesare then won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:31.13 to help pull out the win for AFA.

Air Force returns to action Oct. 18, hosting a five-way meet.
