Ohio State’s Depth Helps Buckeyes Defeat Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Kentucky, October 11. Two weeks after losing its season opener to Georgia, the Kentucky Wildcats lost its first home dual meet of the year to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Ohio State men’s team won 176-122 while the women’s team beat Kentucky 195-104. Despite the loss, the meet marked Lars Jorgensen’s first official home meet as head coach at Kentucky after working in Lexington last season in tandem with Gary Connelly, who was preparing to retire.

“I thought we fought hard,” Jorgensen said. “We lacked in a little bit of depth to compete against a very good Ohio State team. We had some bright spots from our captains and are leaders on our team, and it was nice to see the freshman with some strong performances.”

Kentucky’s bright spots came in diving with wins in all four events, as well as victories in five individual events. Christa Cabot and Greg Ferrucci swept the women’s and men’s diving events to give the Wildcats much-needed points. Eric Bruck posted a quick 50 free winning time of 20.18 to put himself fourth in the collegiate standings. Bruck was a finalist in this event at the 2012 NCAA championships with a 19.61.

Other winners for Kentucky on the men’s side included Maclin Simpson in the 200 fly (1:51.07) and Lucas Gerotto in the 100 fly (49.26). Christina Bechtel swept the butterfly events in the women’s competition, winning the 100 with a 54.34 and the 200 with a 2:00.75.

Ohio State took the top three spots in eight events, led by the following swimmers: Alex Morris in the women’s 200 free (1:49.14), Annie Gillig in the women’s 100 back (56.63), Steven Zimmerman in the men’s 100 back (49.24), Aliena Schmidtke in the women’s 100 free (50.84), Kelly Ann Baird in the women’s 500 free (4:53.73), Alex Miller in the men’s 500 free (4:32.02), DJ Macdonald in the men’s 200 breast (2:02.77) and Tama Gercsak in the men’s 200 IM (1:52.67).
