Boise State Sweeps Friday Night Events at Bulldog Invitational

FRESNO, California, October 11. BOISE State set a new meet and pool record in the women’s 200 medley relay and won all five events of the night to open night one of the Bulldog Invitational, hosted by Fresno State.

The Broncos posted a time of 1:43.15 in the opening relay to slice a second off the meet and pool record of 1:44.13, formerly held by the University of California. Cal came in second in the event tonight in 1:45.97.

Freshman Felicity Cann nearly took down a second meet record in the 500 free, touching in 4:56.52 to just miss Catherine Breed’s 2012 meet record of 4:55.97 from last year. Teammate Taylor Padington also cleared the five-minute mark with a 4:59.50 for second, while San Jose State’s Riley Spitser took third in 5:00.31.

The battle for first in the 200 IM came down to the final touch, as Boise State junior Jessica Bottelberghe just out-touched teammate Sydney Johansen, 2:05.30 to 2:05.33. Boise State made it a clean sweep of the top three with Whitney Jorgensen in third (2:07.94).

Boise State freshman Brittany Aoyama kept the ball rolling for the Broncos, leading the field in the women’s 50 free as five swimmers cleared 24 seconds. Aoyama finished in 23.61, just .06 in front of San Jose State’s Alysha Bush (23.67). Cal’s Farida Osmun took third in 23.75.

Boise State put its stamp on the evening with a seven second victory in the 800 free relay. The Broncos led from wire to wire and finished in 7:33.32, with San Jose State in a distant second (7:40.23). Boise State’s B team took third in 7:40.26.

Through event five, Boise State leads with 353.5 points. San Jose State sits in second with 229 points, followed by host Fresno State (179.5) and Cal (175).
