Texas Women Defeat Rice in Season Opener

AUSTIN, Texas, October 11. THE first dual meet of the season is always a toss-up, and Carol Capitani was pleased with her Texas Longhorns’ women’s swim team today as they won every event against Rice in Austin with a score of 149-99.

“I’m very pleased with how we raced,” Capitani said. “I had no idea where we would be. We were better than we were at the first meet last year. ”

Senior Lily Moldenhauer was the day’s MVP, winning the 100 back (54.05), 200 back (1:58.12) and 100 fly (54.98). Moldenhauer had to fight hard for the win in the 200 back, as teammate Tasija Karosas was right behind with a 1:58.82.

Freshman Madisyn Cox made the most of her college debut with wins in the 200 breast (2:15.93) and 200 IM (2:01.98). Kimmy Phillips, a transfer to Austin from the University of North Texas, notched a win today in the 1000 free with a 10:12.44.

Samantha Tucker, another senior looking to keep the Texas tradition moving forward this season, won the 200 free with a 1:48.91. Notably, the team was without star senior Sarah Denninghoff, who is expected to be a multiple finalist in the backstroke events for the Longhorns at the end of the season.
